Nippon denso make a starter that is half the weight of the standard starter. I have owned kick start husqvarna's and husabergs in the past .. but have never managed to kick start my r80g/s airhead. It has had its compression raised which probably doesn't help... neither does the fact that after twenty kicks I can just push the button and go .. something i couldn;t do on my 570R :)
 
Damn I've been trying to find that vid of the modern Germanic enduro with vintage enduro bikes-you know the one- where the guy is standing on the cylinder kicking away at the starter. Saw it somewhere but can't find it now...

Lightweight starter and battery it is then - after years of kicking away at 600 plus high comp singles, of having to kick 20 plus times to clear out a flooded bike when you drop it, of sweating a swearing at it, and of running a high tick over to prevent stalling.....an electric boot really appeals. bugger the weight.

Been to look at a local R65 79. Too much money and too nice to chop up but gave me the opportunity to have a nose around it. One thing i hadnt really considered was gearing and rear wheel. For tight stuff I am going to need fairly low gearing. Can someone tell me whether the bevel box can be opened and the cogs changed (that might be a really dumb question so apologies in advance) If not what bevel should I try and find and are they all interchangeable (guessing that I need to stick to the twinshock type and not the later mono or paralever). Any idea what rear wheel to use as needs to be spoked.

There are a few $100- copies of the Valeo starter on Ebay - I have been using one on my high comp 1000 cc R80G/S for 60,000 km without any problems.

I fitted a set of heavy duty battery leads at the same time, as the bike as bought was a very poor starter, and was rewarded with a complete transformation, from the old Bosch grinding away for 3 or 4 seconds to bursting into life at a touch of the button.

Interesting development....I missed the R65 on ebay (I hate bidding in the final seconds I always lose out) Anyway I happened to be speaking to another chap that builds BSA Scramblers and he started an ISDT replica a few years ago but never finished it. Its a 78 R65 frame and engine. He has lengthened the swingarm and lightened and braced the frame. He has a spoked back wheel and Maico tank fitted. Thats as far as he got. Going to look at it on Saturday....will keep you posted.:beerjug:

went to see it today - £300 for the lot. Its a 78 R80 frame - 650 motor. 100mm lengthened swingarm 78 Maico tank. Spoked rear wheel etc. So project underway.

I am due down there in a couple of weeks and will take some pics. I have left with him Ohlins shocks, XR600 yokes and forks (was looking for maico forks but fairly rare and expensive now) which I had in the garage. A TLS Husky front wheel, some IMS footpegs and a few other bits and pieces. Looking for a 78 Maico subframe and seat.
 
Congrats. It sounds like the start of a great project. Please post lots of pics all the way along:thumb2 The more of these bikes the better.
