Hey there,

Is anyone using either a Etymotic ER6 or Shure e2c earphones on their Mp3 player? What are your opinions? I am about to purchase a pair and I cant decide between them.

I want to know if you are able to wear them under your helmet comfortably. Thanks for your replies!!!

(I know I shouldn't wear earphones while riding in town as I need to be able to hear traffic, however I plan to use them when cruising on the long, boring, open highways)

Hi there
I can't comment on the Etymotic or Shure earphones but I tried ear buds before and they felt very uncomfortable after a few hours of riding. I am now looking into fixed bluetooth helmet speakers. They should fit neatly into the helmet and will connect wirelessly to my Zumo GPS / MP3 player. I'll let you know how I get on.

cheers
Markus

I have a pair of Shure e2c 'phones and I can wear them comfortably under my lid for an hour or so (that's the longest period so far). I can still hear traffic unless the music's very loud:nono . The sound through the phones is a little on the 'bright' side, lacking richness in the bass notes but perfectly acceptable and loads better than the standard Apple ipod phones.

I have the Shure in-ear phones, and would agree with what DrKen says about the sound, although I've found it can be made nice if your MP3 has a bass bost or equaliser so you can alter the settings. They come with a good zip up potective pouch and a range of ear buds to ensure you can tailor the fit. Haven't actually used them much on the bike yet though.

Etymotic are very high quality. A bit light on bass but, off the bike, they show up poor recordings. On the bike they are extremely effective at blocking the noise of the bike and wind so you don't have to ramp up the volume too much.

They do seem wearable for long periods.

ER6i

I wear my ER6i earphones under my helmet daily. I guess it's true they might be a bit light on the bass, but quite honestly super fidelity at 80mph isn't really necessary to me. They also do a great job of cutting out the wind noise (with or without the MP3 playing) I will say, however, that when I first got them they did hurt my ears a little bit. I'm not sure if I wasn't inserting them correctly, or if it just took awhile to get used to something inside my ear like that... but now that I'm used to them, I don't feel them at all. Fabulous. :thumb

sure - these are good little earphone thingy's - but for the price of them - the audiological properties will be lost when you're on a bike.

buy a pair of the sennheisers too - you can't go wrong at 15 squid :thumb

I've some E2C's and some cheaper Koss ones, I've not tried wearing them for too long, but on trying them with a helmet on they do seem painful, maybe like another poster said it's about fitting them correctly and getting used to them.

dont spend lots of money try these...

i have tried three different sets of in ear phones and the best by far for both sound and confort was a £16.99 per of JVC's from currys. the worst being a pair of £65.00 Sony pair that was ment to electronically cut noise down, they was both too big to be confortable and did not work anyway. the third was a set of "premium" brands that sounded good but 8 times out of 10 would get pulled out of place when i put on my helmet.

The JVC's are so good i am buying 2 sets for my trip to North Africa in April. the only down side is that they are pink, hayho.

Get some ear monitors from Ultimate Ear...absolutely brilliant at all speeds and good for a trip to the South of France......never have the volume set above level 2 out of 25 on my mp3 player and speed makes no difference to the sound level.....with the helmet speakers, almost deafening levels at a standstill are drowned out over 80mph....says summat about wind noise !!
Top sound and ear protection to boot....works for me !!
