Depends on where you are, from Manchester I would go via Southampton, you can do it on 2 trains without going to London.

Use the rail planner and enter various permutations until you get what you want, on a Sunday you can do it for £60 via London looks a bit cheaper. Secret is book in advance and go for a quiet train that they want to get bums on seats.

To be honest I try to avoid London too, especially if you are carrying stuff like a helmet. Well worth the extra to cut down the number of changes and the tube.
