Why do people pay over the odds for stuff on eBay?

I am trying to source a couple of extra Linksys WRT54G wireless 802.11g routers at the moment. I can buy them new from Amazon at £44 with free postage.

For two weeks I have been bidding on used routers on eBay. So far, despite bidding on 10 or more routers I haven't won a single one. I figure that if I can get one new for £44 then I won't pay more than £32 for a used one (including postage). Time after time though I get outbid. Some people are paying well over £50 including postage for a used unit. I have bids outstanding on another 9 units and already one has gone to £48 including postage. What tossers!

Why do I want more Linksys routers? Well this particular unit has the ability to upload alternative firmware. A company called Sveasoft has produced a freeware version which allows you to build a "mesh" of routers at home to extend the coverage of your wireless signal. With 2 extra units I could cover the whole house.

Slim hope, but does anyone have a unit they don't need?

Don't have any routers, but these people are clearly :eek::eek::eek:witts!!

Just goes to show people hate to be outbid, and its not just the guys who are like that its women too...Seems to be the new form of computer rage! :shoot:

Best just buy the one for 44!

Cheers

Joy of ebay... ahem

Hi Mike,

Sorry I do not have a couple of routers in a cupboard to sell you.

Auctions can run away and do on ebay, but I sell stuff a bit on there and the other side of the proverbial coin is the buyers that do not know/hear/see basic facts like cost of new items, condition of used item, payment terms, etc etc.

For example, despite posting my payment options clearly with the ad, the occasional buyer in the US, (most are fine BTW) insists on sending US$ money orders to me despite our having £sterling currency here..!! Then, get sarcastic when I decline their payment and suggest Paypal which is painless for a small percentage. Come on guys, I am not Walmart downtown...

So ebay clearly does have its quota of plonks, including those who will pay more than retail... and as Boz has just said, those that CANNOT be outbid... its weird isn't it???

Sounds to me like you could take the pain out of all this by buying your routers new...? Guarantee with them too and give you more time to peruse more agreeable sites like this one... Just a thought... :)

Good luck

Have not got any mate sorry!

As for E-bay i love it. I bought a jacket from the states for £100 sold it on ebay for £200.
Bought a full set of Leathers ON e-bay (because i thought his presentation was awful) for £130. Presented it better, 3 weeks later sold for £251.
I could go on and on and on.
I dont sit by e-bay all day long but if i could i am sure i could make a living out of others stupidity.
OK some folks like the ill or old who cant get out are excused to a point but the majority are idiots .
This is my latest one, Lazer Helmet brand new......£75 just sold it on E-Bay £125!
All the guy had to do is tap it into a search engine and he would have found it for £75. AMAZING!

Wow! How big is your house???

I have a BT router at one end of the house, which is long and thin, and it covers the whole house and the garden.

Mine too is long and thin (fnaaar!) but the office where my ADSL comes in is in an extension. The signal has to pentrate the former double-brick external wall of the house before it goes into the main part of the building - hence the need for a repeater. The garden isn't a problem because I have a door from my office going to the garden, and funnily enough that's where I'll be working today having seen the weather forecast :D
