I'm looking for a cheap and easily portable device to get on line using WiFi. Would prefer it to be lighter than a laptop, and with a bigger screen than my phone. The above unit will retail at about £220, and seems to fit the bill. Anyone out there have any experience with one, and are there any other suggestions. Any help gratefully received.

I have bought one.
Paid 229 for the 4Gb one with 512Mb RAM.
I have been very impressed although I have only had it just over a week.
I bought it because I liked the idea of a solid state hard drive for carrying daily on the bike. It is also light and doesn't take up much space. I have got a 2Gb SD card and a couple of USB thumb drives that I use with it. The forums suggest putting your home directory on a USB or SD card to avoid too many writes to the solid state drive.
I am happy with the OS - it comes out of the box with Asus' own GUI on a Xandros Linux OS. It works fine and connects to my BT WiFi broadband connection without problems.
The interface is a bit simple and gets boring but a search of the appropriate eeePc forums and you can soon hack it into a KDE desktop and start adding programs.
You don't need to be a Linux geek to use it as it comes from the box, but if you are, it looks as though it will be fun, especially once the warranty is out and I can crack open the case!
You get a disc with it which I think has a cut down XP on it but I must admit that I have not even looked at it.
I might post an update in a few weeks when I have had more use out of it.

Thanks for that Clive. Seems to confirm what I already thought. Think I will wait until the new 16 Gig model comes on stream, and then perhaps prices on the lesser models may drop a little.

Have a look at www.rm.com for details.

At the moment I have two on order from VIP computers, they were doing the best price from the half dozen or so suppliers I tried. Mine will be two white ones with 512ram and 4gb HDD. I wouldn't bother holding out for the bigger HDD models to drive down prices. ASUS are making a big thing of the base models price and it's being suggested they are going down this route to get people interested that they can get a laptop for £XYZ and then inevitably up their spending when they decide to spec up their machine. Virtually all the quotes I got were within a few quid of each other so I think they really have pared margins to the bone. I'll be happy if I'm proved wrong of course! :) I'd forget whacking XP on it and revel in a Windoze/MS alternative that doesn't cost Apple money to buy. I have also used one as a thin client and it ran our Windows environment perfectly without having to be XP.

another cheapo laptop here

My White eeePC might look like Tomy's first laptop but that's taking the biscuit! I read the XOs designer has hit out at Asus saying they are making cheap ones to get the headlines but hoping everyone buys the higher spec. I think he's just cheesed off they've made something for the same money that doesn't look so noddy.

The Everex one looks more like serious competition, and the more the merrier. What we need are these cheap portable devices rather than Apple's million dollar "Airs" that are as much about showing off as being used. (All imho!)
