I have mine charging from the bike when using my Chigee, seems to be Ok

rather depends on the model of phone, the size & condition of the battery and how long you intend to use it.

a decent powerbank might be a viable alternative to a charger wired to the bike, especially if the USB output on your bike is a weedy 1A like my V85

Very possibly, yes. That’ll depend on how long you run the route for, how power hungry the app you are running might be, how many other ‘must have’ apps you might have running in parallel, how hot or cold the day is, the capacity (and state of health) of your phone’s battery and / or the phone itself.

As you will have to power the unit, you might as well power your phone at the same time. But, until then, try it and see for yourself.

Currently I run a WunderLINQ system with the phone on a wireless quadlock charger, so the phone is always charged. Only downside is side brightness in full sun and my failing eyesight.

As you already charge the phone, leave the phone and its charger alone.

Think I’ll put the phone in the tank bag or my pocket. Don’t want to clutter things up with another screen.

On a whole day tour? Maybe. I use a powerbank on an iPhone in my tank bag.
