Hi,

Eid Mubarrak to all who have been fasting for the past 29 days!

Today is the first day of the month of Shawal, which starts when the new moon is seen and which also means the fasting month of Ramadan is over. (Islamic year has 12 lunar months, Ramadan being the 9th, Haj being the 12th).

Today is the Eid day which means there is a big congregational prayer held at dawn in all the mosques followed by a day off.

Eid Mubarrak means Happy Eid and all the Muslims text this to each other like mad!

The excitement comes from not knowing exactly which day will be Eid, since it depends on sighting the new moon - only visible at sunset. It was strongly rumoured that this would not happen until Tuesday evening, but someone managed to see it on Monday evening so that was the end of Ramadan.

Great news. Maybe I will stop getting the smell of huge pots of Curry and having to put up with twenty cars packed with millions of families congregating outside my neighbors house for the past month.:D
