Electrical numpty question for the 1200

If you add accessories such as Autocom and GPS, and if you use the bmw lead to plug the gps in to the correct socket, and connect the Autcom to the accessory socket, (soldered leads, with connectors).
The question is should you put inline fuses with them or does the system sort a problem out.

Most auto com and gps power leads come with built in fuses les

For the sake of a 20p fuse holder, five mins crimping work and a fraction of an ounce weight, is it worth risking £300 worth of GPS regardless????

thats what I thought, and yet cut the fuse out of the lead this afternoon

The fuse is not there to save your GPS... The only reason the fuse would blow on either the GPS or the Autocom, is if you get an interternal short, in which case, with today's disposable electronics, it's essentialy fried anyways...

The fuse it there to prevent you starting your bike on fire if the GPS or Autocom gets a short... it's to protect the wires... In the case of the GPS, you could also short the connector (much more likely) and have a fire...

That all said, if you are plugged into the 1200's power control system, you get the same protection as a fuse in the silicon circuit breaker technology...

But I'd leave the fuse there anyways...

You'd be well advised to include the fuse supplied with any of the attached devices in the circuit - whether it be for the gps, autocom, etc - as the accessory socket is rated to supply up to 5 amps before it shutsdown the circuit (well that's the theory but also see thread - http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60254 ). This will be a considerably higher rating than the fuse likely to be included with your gps or Autocom...
