I know this is probably a stupid question, but what type of wire would i ask for at Maplins in order fit a permanent feed for my optimate. Im presuming i would just ask for 12v wire, but not really sure, does it have to have a certain ampage ?
Also, when fitting an Autocom to a switched live feed, what do you use to actually connect the wires ? Im presuming there is a better way than just stripping the wire and wrapping some insulation tape round the join ?
Would i be able to connect the autocom wires to the wires of a 12v socket that is already fitted ?

Questions, questions i know .

Cheers,

I'm guessing an optimate puts out around 5A max? I'd go for 7.5A min and probably 10A. Two core sleeve would be best. Voltage spec relates more to the insulation so wouldn't worry about it:thumb

Don't forget to fuse it with a fast blow.

Forgive me for being a thicky, but what exactly would i ask for if i walked into Maplins ? bearing in mind i know less than the spotty oiks that normally work in there !

Cheers.

Why not just buy the standard fly lead that attaches to the battery terminals for an Optimate which comes complete with a connector for the Optimate, check out the Optimate website and most bike dealers who sell Ops will carry it, my BMW dealer in Hertford did and i have a very old model. About a £5 I think, no soldering connectors either.

A neat and tidy suggestion :thumb2

(A) You could solder it, then wrap the join with heatshrink or suitable tape. There's a thread somewhere how to do it.

Probably easier to use a tap connector http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/connectors/connectors.php Get some in Halfrauds.

(B) Yes.

15 -20 amps should be fine

I fitted a power socket on the left hand panel where the warm air exits the radiator by the front cylinder on my 950 adv.

the battery is in the same place under the engine just drop the belly pan.

easy to do mate :thumb2

if you need any bits give me a shout I can easily knock up a loom for you and send it .

Just decide where you are going to put the socket which you can buy in hein gericke .

Some have it loose in the pocket on the tank .

There is a east mids meet soon pop over and we can sort it there :thumb

Dont worry about mentioningKTM

Paul,

Nippy Norman does a socket kit for £10 http://www.nippynormans.com/prodinfo.asp?number=BAS-SD14&variation=&aitem=8&mitem=15 You can then either make a small bracket or drill your bodywork.

You can buy a genuine optimate lead with the right plug already fitted for £8 ish http://www.accumate.co.uk/it020003.htm

The nippy item is too short for the ktm .

the battery is under the engine ,and I would recommend it is fused at the battery with a relativley high rated fuse (that way if a high enough rated cable is used it can be used for more applications at a later date if required )

Each item you plug in should have its own fusing anyway :thumb2

Thanks everyone, and thankyou Ming. I may well take you up on your offer if i need another power outlet. The one that is fitted may well be enough for me at the mo as i only run a MP3 player off my Autocom. Im gonna use the 12v socket for connecting the optimate, just need the relevant cigarett type connector.

If i were to add another 12v socket, could i make it a switched one. and not permantly live ?

Cheers

Paul

I use the sockets as on the Optimate for powering stuff on my bike. The connectors are standard Tamiya R/C stuff so just buy the loose connectors at my local model shop and make up my own custom leads. Made up a y-lead so that I could take power of the Optimate battery fly lead to give me two power outputs to the bike. Maplins also do the Optimate/Tamiya connectors but a bit more expensive than my local model shop.

For power leads with inline fuses I use the following from Maplins:
