Bugger.......

It's winter, so I thought I'd go through the bike, like you do. 2002 R1150R single spark, no ABS.

Service it, etc, and buy some farkles, just like most on here.

I know, I thought, Led dash lights, I need some of those...... LEDs ordered, and delivered.

I take out the bulbs, all seem to have blown, mmmm put ignition on, no speedo, Rev counter or clock bulb working, all idiot lights do though. At this point I should of had a look as to why, but didn't. They worked last time it was dark, I'm sure they did....

No problem I thought, I'll pop in the new led side light I have while I'm here, and then just because I'm impatient I'll turn on the ignition to have a look at it and revel in the ledness... (:blast), then I'll put in the dash LEDs.

Ignition on, no lights from side light and smoke from behind the speedo!!!!!

Ignition off, panic, think I've set bike/house on fire as garage is attached........

So it appears after a sit down, lots of swearing, and easy job gone hard muttering, that the wire to the clock bulb has melted the insulation, I didn't have a bulb in it as I was changing it you see, but couldn't wait because I'm an idiot....

Pictures are of the bike as is now, the offending melted wire (pic 3), the really tight twist in the loom behind the headlight (pic 2)

Also as I've taken it all apart for access, I've found that the oil pressure bulb has insulating tape on the brown wire not going anywhere, so it appears some other fuckwit has been here before... (Pic 1)

I'll go though it, just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas or if it you've come across this or anything similar. I know LEDs can have a different polarity, is this a possibility?

I'm going off to sulk now.....

To be honest, I would be happy rather than sulking. Happy that the whole bike then the house did not end up as one giant bonfire. I stand to be corrected as I am NOT an auto electrician ( I can wire a plug but that is the extent of it) but if most or all of the idiot lights as you say were blown I would get someone to look it over. I would suggest step toe, but given your location I would have absolutely no hesitation in talking to Steve Sriminger at Scriminger engineering. He is a top, top bloke and loves BMW's he did the gearbox on my R1100RS and charged me under £500 for taking it off the bike breaking it down, fitting new bearings/seals where required and putting it all back together. He also gives free advice. The website is Scriminger engineering and I cannot recommend him highly enough. I bet you don't want your bollocks toasted should it burst into flames on a ride, they are a great bike and this is nothing compared to all of the work I had to do on my R1100RS when I got it. If only I had known......

Yes they are a great bike, very underrated.
I'm in the relieved I found it frame of mind now...... Optimist you see :D also the last ride was with my 12 daughter as pillion, so no, wouldn't want it combusting whilst in motion!

I know Steve, he rebuilt my final drive last year, he's a top guy. He has scaled back his business to gearboxes and final drives, but if you smile sweetly he can be coerced to look at bikes. If not the other option is Mikeyboy of this parish who's also a star, I went to one of his workshop days this time last year.

I'll have a look tomorrow, the saving grace is my bike has a light on/off switch so I could turn the lights off and no more smokey smokey... If I'm still at a loss I'll try one of these guys.

Open to other ideas or piss take though!
Cheers

Hope you have disconected the battery, just in case......
Let's see if anyone else can come up with a solution then, I reckon it's worth giving Mr Scrimminger a call in the meantime.

Update

It looks as if the short was at the clock bulb holder. The main damage is all here, not further down in the loom.
I think when I took the bulb out to replace, which I then didn't (:blast), the base of the bulb holder came loose and touched the holder, so when I turned on the lights it started to arch causing heat and melting the plastic insulation which then caused more arching and smoke...
The wires in the tight kink held by the cable tie looks ok, and wasn't the fault (I think) but what a crap way to attach a wiring loom!

So I'll strip and replace that wire, insulate it with heat shrink etc, and try again.

It's a front loom so if it's damaged beyond that I'll replace it, I've looked at the price, but for the sake of £150 it'll be right.
So it would appear it was my fault...... So as I said right at the beginning, bugger......

Have a look on e bay.de, I got a complete loom for my R1100RS off of there. You could save yourself a few pennies.
