So it goes like this - My bike 08 1200GSA, 20,000 miles

The 2 Days over Christmas, put it on the Bee Emm charger ..(just in case !) - Go to the garage on Boxing day and the rear light and the front parking light are on (key not in ignition) ..... pull out charger and turn on ignition and the left indicator comes on and won't go off. WTF:nenau

Have now repeated the same thing with exactly the same results / symptoms.

So the question to the great and good - Has this happened to you or anyone you know? I will get it in to BMW ASAP after the break, however as this is my only form of transport, I am hoping that there is a quick fix .......HELP!:D:D:D

For a start you could try resetting the electronics.

Disconnect the battery for a good while - 15 minutes.

Reconnect the battery and reset the TPS by switching on the ignition (don't start the engine) and opening the the throttle slowly to max - hold it there for a second then close it. Do this a couple of times.

Try the bike now.

Your charger is CANBus compliant I take it?

There is a way, I forget now what it is so do a search, of switching on the park lights. I seem to recall that it involved one of the indicator switches being pushed, whilst the ignition is being turned off.

I wonder if perhaps somehow this happened and / or the bike has confused itself into the park mode, possibly through a dirty or damaged ignition or indicator switch?

I have just tried the disconnect, unfortunately the indicator came straight back on as soon as I turned the ignition on .... and again wouldn't cancel. As soon as the ignition went of, the parking lights have come on again .... GRRRRR.

Meester Wapping - Is the sequence you are talking about the process to turn off the main beam, where you hit the right hand indicator for 5 secs, then the Indicator cancel button for 5 secs - I have tried this one as well in the vain hope it would do something .....:blast

To get the parking lights on (with ign OFF) ..... Turn off the ignition and immediately press and hold the left turn indicator sw.... could you unknowingly have done this?? sounds like its possible?...or maybe a sticky left indicator switch if it comes on when the ignition is switched on again.

No. That is the sequence for turning off the main beam. You were looking for the sequence to turn the side lights on.

I assume you have tried re-starting the bike? That process clears / boots the bike's 'memory' - for instance when changing a blown bulb.

Assuming Viking has the right sequence, the parking and rear light being on would match what you found. Similarly, as it is the left indicator that initiates the parking lights' sequence, in may explain why the left indicator is flashing.

Were you pushing the left hand indicator when turning the ignition off? Or, was / is something pressing on it? For instance a tank bag, if you had the bike at full left lock to engage the steering lock?

There again it may be nothing more than coincidence and / or there is a simple fault whereby the bike 'thinks' it will initiate the parking light sequence on its own accord. Chances are the fault, if it is one, will be logged in the bike's diagnostics.

Or, maybe the left indicator switch is dirty / faulty / sticky. This might translate - in the bike's simple world - to a push, when the ignition is turned off, kicking the parking light process into life, perhaps? Maybe winter road crud has corroded the left had switch or its lead has chafed?

As you now seem able to replicate the process at will and the (left hand?) indicator seems to be on permanently. It looks more and more likely it is a broken / dirty / chafed left indicator switch. It is easy to clean (do a search, there is a thread on it I think) or investigate further.

Whatever the final reason, let us know, please. It might be handy for someone else who has a similar problem.

Try spraying your handlebar switch gear with some WD40 or other brand of water-displacing/lubricating fluid. I think Wappings diagnosis is spot-on, maybe a quick squirt will free it up or displace any water that could be shorting it out.

Sounds like you have a fault left turn indicator switch.

This witch also turns on the parking lights, if you press if after turning evrything off. The fact that you can't turn the indicators off would seem to confirm that , IMHO.

Seeing as it is an '08, the switch should be covered under warranty, and is a quick fix. They should be able to do it whilst you wait.

WD-40 may resolve the problem temporarily. If it is the indicator switch itself failing, then WD-40 could provide a temporary relief, but you do not know when it is going to wear off, so you need to check the parking lights a few minutes after turning everything off, and keep an eye on your left turn indicators at all times.

You don't want to be lying in the road listening to someone say "Sorry mate, but you were indicating a left turn so I thought it safe to pull out right in front of you...".

I pulled my right turn indicator bulbs when the right switch failed, and reverted to hand signals when needed.

Thanks guys! ......

Have just gone out and soaked the LH indicator in WD40 ... reconnected the battery and Hey Presto .... no parking lights and no indicator on when I turn the indicators on. So it is time to get to BMW and get the LH indicator replaced under warranty.

Many thanks for the contributions - you guys are TOPS .:thumb2

My 06 1200 nearly killed me when a guy pulled out on me at a junction he thought I was turning left:eek:
Luckily I managed to get around him the switch was changed under warranty.
next the front brake light switch packed in which caused the servo for the brakes not to work just as I was approaching a busy roundabout:eek:again
changed under warranty
next the fuel pump relay packed in mid corner 4th gear 3/4 throttle caused the bike to start running wide so I nudged it again to make the corner just at the point where it decided to work again and tried to high side me
that was it I lost confidence in the big BM and sadly it had to go:(
so now 10 months on I'm riding a caponord 6 grand otr brand new nearly 10,000m and nuffins gone wrong YET
