So it goes like this - My bike 08 1200GSA, 20,000 miles
- Go to the garage on Boxing day and the rear light and the front parking light are on (key not in ignition) ..... pull out charger and turn on ignition and the left indicator comes on and won't go off.
There is a way, I forget now what it is so do a search, of switching on the park lights. I seem to recall that it involved one of the indicator switches being pushed, whilst the ignition is being turned off.
I wonder if perhaps somehow this happened and / or the bike has confused itself into the park mode, possibly through a dirty or damaged ignition or indicator switch?
Meester Wapping - Is the sequence you are talking about the process to turn off the main beam, where you hit the right hand indicator for 5 secs, then the Indicator cancel button for 5 secs -
No. That is the sequence for turning off the main beam. You were looking for the sequence to turn the side lights on.
To get the parking lights on (with ign OFF) ..... Turn off the ignition and immediately press and hold the left turn indicator sw.... could you unknowingly have done this?? sounds like its possible?...or maybe a sticky left indicator switch if it comes on when the ignition is switched on again.
I assume you have tried re-starting the bike? That process clears / boots the bike's 'memory' - for instance when changing a blown bulb.
Assuming Viking has the right sequence, the parking and rear light being on would match what you found. Similarly, as it is the left indicator that initiates the parking lights' sequence, in may explain why the left indicator is flashing.
Were you pushing the left hand indicator when turning the ignition off? Or, was / is something pressing on it? For instance a tank bag, if you had the bike at full left lock to engage the steering lock?
There again it may be nothing more than coincidence and / or there is a simple fault whereby the bike 'thinks' it will initiate the parking light sequence on its own accord. Chances are the fault, if it is one, will be logged in the bike's diagnostics.
Or, maybe the left indicator switch is dirty / faulty / sticky. This might translate - in the bike's simple world - to a push, when the ignition is turned off, kicking the parking light process into life, perhaps? Maybe winter road crud has corroded the left had switch or its lead has chafed?
I have just tried the disconnect, unfortunately the indicator came straight back on as soon as I turned the ignition on .... and again wouldn't cancel. As soon as the ignition went of, the parking lights have come on again .... GRRRRR.
As you now seem able to replicate the process at will and the (left hand?) indicator seems to be on permanently. It looks more and more likely it is a broken / dirty / chafed left indicator switch. It is easy to clean (do a search, there is a thread on it I think) or investigate further.
Whatever the final reason, let us know, please. It might be handy for someone else who has a similar problem.
