I get my email on my laptop when i'm travelling, but when I get home, the messages that have been downloaded onto the laptop don't get downloaded onto the desktop.

Even if I go to the web interface for my email and mark some messages 'unread' they still don't get downloaded to the desktop.

Anybody have a clue?

Probably the settings on the first PC to download the email.

look at this thread which I think is the same issue

hmm,, maybe - but the emails are still there on the web interface... not sure now, but worth checking
Thanks for chipping in, but I don't think that is the issue because, as you say, the mails are still on the server and even marked as unread.

I use Gmails free imap servers which will synchronise all of your email folders between any device. Works perfectly between Ubuntu, android and ios. It also lets you send email using an alias, ie your own email address, so you don't even need to use a gmail address if you don't want to.

Problem with IMAP is its horribly slow when downloading all your email and doing searches and I don't have access to email when I'm offline

i use IMAP (google & iCloud) using Mac Mail as a client with no problems, and do have access to mail while off line :nenau

OK, it seems I do have the email offline, but searches in Mail don't work - seems I can now only search on terms in the Subject field, not in the body text:nenau

that's odd. i just checked, and i can definitely search the text body just by entering a word in the search box :eek

however...

as you type in the search box, you should get suggestions on a drop down menu underneath. the top one is either Subject or Message, it seems to vary. click either of those and it refines the search + it creates clickable field in the left of the search box. click that, there's a drop down menu and you can select Message there.

steady, that's 2 emoticons this time. you'll wear yourself out :P

Bizarre, I closed Mail down and restarted it and now it searches in the message body as well as the subject/from/to fields just like it used to..:nenau

This has now turned into a complete nightmare. I converted all my devices (except one) to IMAP which was OK, but now all my mail for the time from when i converted to IMAP until yesterday has disappeared.

Its not on the server nor on any of the IMAP computers. Fortunatly I have a copy on a laptop which was still using POP otherwise I would be completly fcucked - I rely on email for my very livliehood

How can this happen? Is it just fundamentally less reliable?

The Mail Box gets screwed and loses the data, IMAP is reliable if you administer the server yourself and can restore it yourself after it's lost it's mail or you don't care if you loose data. They can all loose some mail but with POP3 and a local client at least you have a downloaded copy.

Exactly what I was thinking, though I'm under heavy pressure from my supplier to use IMAP because the POP system is very resource intensive (for them) when copies are kept on their server.

Either way they are both kept on the server till either you or they delete them so there bullshitting you. The servers I use by default use POP3 and IMAP account are just a tick box to setup up, Oh and that will be a extra £10 per mailbox on your bill thank you, which could well be the reason they want you to change.
