Emergency call failure

Might save your life , once . Out riding alone , crash , injured , signal and response sent .
I personally find it reassuring, mine does occasionally loose connection but not often but I ride all over the mountains and coast roads so I would expect more issues but have had few .
Normally for some reason when in built up areas . Not a gimmick , a possible life line .

You of all people surely would never need it. ;) :D

On my bike, the warning on the TFT comes up occasionally.
The warning seem to pop up in areas where the topography might shield for phone signals. However, quite often, my phone still stays connected when the warning comes up.
This leads me to suspect that the SOS system has lower sensitivity than my phone. Given that the receiver is hidden inside the bike, out of harms way in case of an accident, this is not a good place when it comes to receiving signals. Especially on the GSA with a metal fuel tank. The bike may act like a Faradays cage.

Even with this shortcoming the system seems to be working 99% of the time, but I guess this percentage depends on where you ride with regard to phone coverage.

Hopefully not ...:thumb2 I do remember the pain of when I dislocated my knee when out on solo ride green laning on the 9 miler on the Isle of Man , shit that was hard pain , got back mind , maybe with the SOS it may have been different , but i was on my 250 at the time rode straight to the hospital and fell off in the carpark to add to the pain.

Does the fact that it is only 2G make a difference?

I don't think so. Improvement between the different generations are all about data transfere capacity and speed. I suspect the issues with the SOS system is an sensitivity issue.

Generally, newer is better. But choice of technology for data transfer, where 2G introduced SMS and MMS will not influence a choice of a receiver with the newest components that improves reception.

Which generation the receiver/transmitter of signals have is unknown to yours truly.
But since 3G and newer is all about data transfer, this technology is not relevant for a system that merely sends a simple message regarding present position and handles voice calls.

An SOS button would have been handy yesterday when I was alone with the bike and my battery failed completely.
I had to walk all the way from the garage to the house before I could instigate recovery measures (order a new one). :P

I had the SOS system on my 2019 1250 gs , and for the first few months had the "system failure" message displayed. This was sorted by software update to TFT. I'm reliably informed that there is a sim card fitted to the TFT and it does indeed lose signal on occasion

I had the misfortune to lose control of my bike earlier this year on a remote country road, and the SOS feature had notified emergency services before i could recover myself and bike back onto the road. Was a sceptic at the time of purchase, but having seen it work and it save me and the bike, would have it fitted again.

Well good to know it works, it can also be used for breakdowns. Must be a GS TFT thing, as I said before, never had an error message on my RT.

RT: Plastic fairing, plastic bags. Does not block radio signals.
GS: Metal racks, alu. cases, steel crashbars. GSA Metal fueltank, upper crashbars.
TFT has no influence on the reception, it merely display the message from the computers.

You know the answer then, buy an RT :)

Mine used to loose signal and alarm when ‘phones on O2 and Vodafone had a good signal. It’s supposed to work across all providers. What absolute bollocks. Had several bikes with it on, all very poor. Ordered my upcoming bike without it.

its all about BM collecting data on how and where the bike is used.... they will pretend to use to improve the bikes, but market to you the need to pay for it on BS safety grounds.

back to reality, in the end will be exclusively used to help imprison you, via sharing the data with governments, google and the police
EU has mandated electronic monitoring of cars in the background

conform or die - I'd disconnect the rubbish if I had it

Mr Happy :).. you may be over thinking this one as i have been abusing the shit out of mine both in the UK and Europe and have had no knock on the door , i feel you are a bit paranoid and may also think Santa exists lol ..:D

On the other hand if its true , i will be locked up for a long , long time...

That my friend is not the reality.

The bike transmits the position ONLY when the SOS function is activated. The service provided is not connected to BMW. You get in touch with a system that replies to vehicles from all brands. The system is now mandatory for new cars, and as the boxes gets smaller and smaller, the debate is up to include MC in the mandatory group of vehicles.

Disconnecting the system already paid for is of course the owners privilege. But in my book this proves nothing but the owners lack of understanding, with perhaps a touch of stupidity.

Not that I'm bothered about being about being tracked at all. But on another thread on another forum a chap has had his RT stolen from a dealership. He apparently asked the dealer if they could find the bike by the SOS call function, to which they said, they could but BMW would need a court order to release the information. So guess the SOS function is like a mobile, it is constantly in touch with a tower, which would give location, but as for BMW tracking us all for devious purposes, just another conspiracy theory :)

You're GPS will do that for you.
