Came off the Rotterdam Ferry on Friday morning and set off down into Germany, 200 or so miles later in the outside lane of the autobahn bike lost all power and the EML started flashing along with various others. , pulled in clutch switched off main ignitionswitch and restarted the bike , lights cleared but it was feeling rough
Twenty or so miles later exactly the same thing and again a rolling restart cleared the lights and restored power.

Annoying not to say possibly dangerous, for the rest of the day the bike was okay but a bit rough.

Following day it did exactly the same thing at just under 200 miles and again 20 odd miles later, thankfully on slower roads but still disconcerting and after each event bike feels rougher and less responsive.

Nursed the bike down from Oetz to Zell am See yesterday where we are staying for ten days and took it to a main dealer 5 miles away at 9am this morning and left it there.

They were busy toxay and will do diagnostics tomorrow, but say it potentially looks like an issue with the throttle potentiometer sensor in one side failing ,saying they have had a few on 2017/18 bikes.

Anyone had similar?

I had the same issue on my 2018 GSA a couple of months ago. Ended up having it recovered to the dealer. Despite asking for specific feedback on the issue, all I had from them was it needed the throttle parameters between twist grip and throttle bodies resetting. Following its return, I covered just under a 1000 miles with no further issues. Then it was time for PX.

Mechanic said sometimes the reset works as a permanent fix, other times it may last a day, will have to see don't fancy issues on the way home, bike has a bmw insured warranty so will claim when I get back if neccessary

Right side throttle body sensor buggered, as on newer bikes they are resin encapsulated and non replaceable it needs the throttle body changed, item is coded to the bikes chassis number so a factory order part with a seven day lead time, might have the bike back for next tuesday before we leave or will have to stop on and change ferry booking etc .
Insured warranty means I have to pay and reclaim in the UK,for those who say the extended warranty is not worth it try a bill for €1200 for parts and labour plus any incidental expenditure.
Did have a scare when they said the warranty expired yesterday, it is monthly and the d/d went out on Saturday and did not register in their system until today so had I been stranded yesterday I would have had no bmw recovery only my Bemoto cover.
It cost me £34 in mobile calls tiday to sort it all out, bloody bmw's

Re this thread there was a confusion in translation on Monday, dealers tried another used but proven throttle body but it did not cure the issue, bike is also showing in conjunction with the two recorded throttle body faults a left hand switchgear one.

They have had the same on two customers bikes and in conjunction with the factory they sussed out that rather than the throttle body tps issue it is indicative of a fritzed ecu.

In both cases the new ecu has fixed the fault so hopefully third time is the charm, factory say if the ecu doesn 't work it is new wiring loom time, apparently though throttle bodies are also failing and as stated as the tps is now a resin encapsulated part of the body it cannot simply be replaced requiring a complete new throttle body assembly

TPS= Throttle Position Sensor and it's in the throttle. It only needs to be calibrated and is not coded to the bike as it's not a module.

Reset adaptation values
This procedure causes the digital engine electronics DME adaptation values to be reset in order to compensate for tolerances after a component replacement, for example.
After a successful reset, all of the necessary steps for correctly teaching the adaptation values in again are specified.

Adaptation groups
For the DME, all adaptation values can either be reset in total or individually for each group. The following menu items are available for selection:

  • Throttle twistgrip
  • Throttle valve(s)
  • Transmission
  • Gearshift assistant
  • Clutch
  • Mixture preparation (see note)
  • Camshaft adjustment
  • ASC / DTC
  • Knock control

Note
Select the adaptation values of the "mixture preparation" after the exchange of the following components:

  • Fuel system (electric fuel pump, fuel pressure sensor)
  • Temperature sensors (coolant, intake air, engine oil)
  • Speed sensors (crankshaft, camshaft, switching cams)
  • Electrical valves (injection, tank ventilation, secondary air)
  • Servomotors (Exhaust flap, unfiltered-air flap, interference duct damper, differentiated intake system DISA)
  • Ignition coil
  • Exhaust system, catalytic converter, oxygen sensor
  • Complete engine, transmission,

Modules that are coded to the bike
