Emptying/flushing fuel tank?!

Your local council should be able to tell you what to do with it, unless someone wants it for bonfire night :thumb

Tried phoning them earlier, no one there....forgot it's POETS day! :aidan

I know a couple of guys in the motor trade so I expect they'll know what to do with it......think I'll steer clear of putting it in the car.

As I said in my disclaimer, I don't advise anyone to do this in a car they like. I stated 5% based on a "safe-ish" estimate given the advice I received. This was that for 10 litres of unleaded in an empty tank, filling up with a further 70 litres (approx, please don't tell me my tank will only hold 78 litres) of diesel would be ok. It was ok, and I would use diesel with a small amount of petrol in my volkwagon again if I had too.

I did say that I didn't really like this car much, didn't I :augie

Also, the petrol should float on top of the diesel (shouldn't it?) and will evaporate off in time, which is why I kept the tank topped up for a while after it happened. Therefore the chance of any appreciable amount of petrol going through the pump or injectors should be slim.

I suppose it's not your car, so why worry, although I would guess it would have mixed and gone through. My wife put 5 litres into my diesel Seat and it cost £60 to get the tank drained at our local garage - seemed like good insurance against a £1,000 plus bill.

I can understand you erring on the safe side if you have had problems previously, but to be honest I think if the fuel systems are that sensitive we would be breaking down all the time , what with bad fuel, water in fuel, additives etc., etc.

The fact that it's not my car doesn't really come into it. I still treat it as my own (for better or worse).

The person who told me it would be ok was from the volkswagon fleet assistance company, so I am not quite as feckless as I might have made out.

Sorry if this has raised strong feelings - that wasn't the intention. :o

Maybe we should let it go now. :beerjug:
