Does it self heal if it happens? Assuming the cause is no longer there. Engines heat the gloop up and blow it out, does or can the gearbox do the same?

If it doesn't remove the water from the oil, is there any rules of thumb on how long it can be left?

if the oil looks emulsified, i would change it.

the likely cause is water running down the speedo cable and getting past the rubber cover.

i found the solution to be a new rubber thing + fitting with a lashing of silicone grease to seal.

Don`t leave it thinking that it`ll 'fix itself'...it won`t.

Change your gearbox oil ASAP....and have a look at where your speedo cable enters the gearbox. :thumb2

It's not un common...happens not quite a lot...well not quite a lot .......but it does happen more than you would expect......in my experience, of course

I have changed it after the swim back from Scotland on May day and thar Tuesday. I've also treated the bike to a new speedo boot, so am hoping it wont reoccur. Just wondered if it would fix itself if you were on a long trip away

I renewed the little rubber cover on mine (airhead, R100RS) and when I put it back I put a little cable tie on it with enough tension on it to stop any rain running down past it, but loose enough to allow it to slipped back into position. It looks pretty neat. Well, I had a spare tie, so what the hell...:)

PS I've often wondered if water gets in and emulsifies and then reconstitutes without my knowledge.

I wonder where we could ask about that. Hey- there's always the Beakchat & Bollox.:blast
