Anyone got thoughts on which engine protection bars are best? Altrider or the BMW? Altrider are £50 more expensive, bigger tube size and seem to encircle the cylinder head leaving the face fully exposed. The BMW have a bar that goes across the centre of the head with nothing at the top, is this important?

Altriders were fitted to all the hire bikes at Motoquest in Alaska. They certainly looked more effective and substantial than anything else, but I did bang my shins on them!

Heed engine bars are very good. Saved my engine when dropped my bike on ice also very well priced.

What about SW Motech? Ilike the look of them

Dropped my last GS on either side at less than walking pace on the road and in those circumstances they did the job brilliantly. The black ones touch up easily with a quick rub with a file to remove any high points and some satin black if scratch marks bother you too.

You may have bought your bars already. I fitted AltRider to mine not only do I think they look better but I believe they are made from hard steel whereas the BMW ones are made from soft steel. I had a pair fitted when someone "T" boned me at a junction they were scratch but the engine was perfect, I also suspect they had more than a hand in protecting my leg too.

I recently went for OEM BMW bars and MachineArt head covers for a belt and braces finish.
I like the fact that the BMW bars fit nicely and would hope (how naive) that they would perform as intended.
