Engine Bars vs Head Guards

I am thinking about getting some form of protection for my engine.

I prefer the look of Head Guards (specially, Steptoe/Stanton head guards) and I have read on the site that some crash bars can crack the engine.

How good is the protection with the head guards vs engine bars?

Pros/Cons?

That'll depend on how often and at what speed you intend to drop your bike

The 11** mounting points for headguards are better than the 1200s though.

I would suggest that crash bars are the better solution if:

1. you find the bike a handful at standstill - they offer better overall protection should the bike simply fall over depending how the bike falls (and the design) the engine, tank and other expensive parts may be saved.

2. if you want extra mounting points for lights and such.

Me? - I prefer the Headguards.

IMO, if you go sliding down the road at any sort of speed or hit any obstruction (kerb etc.), then neither engine bars or head guards are going to save the protruding cylinder head from damage. The best they can do is prevent damage when it falls over.

Ergo, head guards are as good as owt and prettier with it. Less likely to touch down during enthusiastic cornering, too - BMW's bars are relatively easy to scrape and can lift the front wheel for you.

Just changed from BMW adventure bars to a pair of Steptoe's finest...

1150 Adv bars AND Touratw@ head protectors on mine, and the bashing both get shows that neither provides adequate protection

I've also got the Touratw@ lobe protectors on the tank lobes and they've taken a few hits.


Most of my ridiing is off road on very rocky terrain though -maybe I should just stop dropping it

Ditch the crash bars and make sure you get some rocker cover protection.The covers are are only a couple of mill thick in places and you wont be able to ride the bike pissing oil out. Crash bars are only any good for spills less than ten miles an hour at most or if your bike is static..

Or be like me and fit a set of Moto tech bars and a set of Steptoes fine guards , You can never have enough protection ,LOL , all fit nice together .

you can just as easily ask 'wouldn't those engine bars catch on the kerb and send the bike somersaulting... '

in an accident anything can happen and its not possible to allow for all eventualities. start worrying about what 'may' happen and where will it end?

plenty of pics on advrider which show what guards of this type are capable of. and 'snapping off' hasn't been one of them. however saving the 'covers' from being 'holed' in a slide - definitely is.

I fitted a set of engine bars too.

No, look at them - they get held on and grip even tighter to the head if you go down. And they won't throw the bike over or dig in .
