After deciding not to ride my bike in this weather , i,ve been forced into using it for work every day now

so I decided engine bars are a must . so popped into my local bmw dealer earlier and they didnt have any in stock , I was told that they were on back order and that they have been waiting over a month :blast

so I got a list of dealer for this site and starting to ring around and I couldnt find a single dealer with them in stock , One dealer told me he had had them on order over 266 days

so i gave touratech a call there gonna get back to me asap , and hopefully I'll get a set before xmas

Has anyone bought any recently if so can you let me no where :nenau

Try Motobins - they do H&Bs and they had a few clearance items (fitted to customer's bike, then taken off) a couple of weeks ago. Just paid £100 incl delivery for a almost new set for the 1200.

I like the SW-Motech bars. They look symmetrical and not uneven like the H & B. Also they are made from 25 mm material, and not 19 mm.

thanks guys :beerjug:

is it a case of you get what you pay for with these ie . touratech ones are about £270 . or are they all about the same

My H&Bs have been down four times. Once in a slow speed (10mph) slip on ice at a traffic light due to ice, twice stationary in a parking lot due to ice, and once at 20mph into the side of an articulated tanker that turned in front of me and proceeded to drag the bike. Scratched and slightly dented, the bars protected the engine perfectly and are still on the bike. For £150 they served me well, and I bought another set in case I wanted sparkly new ones.

robjet, i have a set of sw motech engine bars for sale as in peter's photo (not the upper bars though)
they are immaculate
pm me if you are interested. was going to post an ad in the for sale section but just haven't got round to it yet

+1 for SW Motech, the bar underneath the pot does what its supposed to do when mine fell over, the genuine BM one doesn't seem to me to offer as much protection when I looked at them, but others might say different.

Like zimboy my h&b's have been down 4 times. Once at about 30 or so. No damage to the engine or rest of the bike, apart from a scape on the plastic of a trax rhs pannier. They do spark nice while sliding down the road at night:blast

The original BMW crash bars are made from 19 mm stainless steel, which is as we all know not as tough as mild steel. To my opinion their design is flawed. Even a mild drop at a few mph will cause these bars to folding backwards. Sometimes they can cause more damage as compared to nude cylinders.

The Touratech bars are made from 19 mm SS tubing, too. But they have an underneath bar, therefore should not give in so easily. Besides, they look great.

The H & B's are made from 19 mm steel with an underneath bar. They should do the job in most cases, especially if the bikes just slides. As long as the lower part does not collide with solid objects, such as a curb.

The SW-Motech bars are made from 25 mm steel tubing and also include a underneath bar. They seem the most stabile crash bars to me.

Solid construction is not always the best for crash bars. Not giving in can result the crash bar to cause expensive damage to the engine case. What's better, this is a question that comes down to individual needs and views, it is a question everybody has to answer for himself. As for me, I do assume if my Motechs will cause my engine case to break I may have other problems than this.

I have SW motech bars. I think they do the job. Steve at cooper's motorrad TW opined that stronger bars are more likely to transfer shocks to the engine block and perhaps causes more expensive damage. :blast It's swings and roundabouts I suppose. i'll stick with what I have:augie

SW Motech bars are very good and solid - I came off mine doing about 45 to 50 mph bike went down the road on left hand side for a good 2o yards and then dug in and flipped onto the right hand side. It came to rest in the grass verge and to be fair the only damage was the scuffing on the bars and the broken indicator / scuffed handguard but that was because the bars dug int the grass verge.

Not a scratch on the rest of it and I took them off to check bolds and mountings - everything was fine.
