Engine bars

I'm sure it's a widely asked question so I apologise in advance if it's too much for some to cope with, but no computer at present and the search facility on this site seems not to work on my phone.
Engine bars for 1100GS. I like them. I think I fancy a set of black Hepco Becker ones but the SW mototech seem more popular. Is there a reason for this? My choice is currently based on looks alone. I know this makes me a tart but you've got to add farkles...

I had some H&B ones on my 1100, but not for long. They just get in the way when you want to work on the bike. Just get some decent rocker cover guards.

I can understand if your a shorty and on tiptoe that these may help, although from what I've seen the head guards are usually good enough for low speed spills. But if your able to get both feet down flat your just adding more weight to an already hefty machine.
My 850 came with a set which I've often thought I'd remove, but my 1150 doesn't have any and I've no great desire for them. Not sure which make I've to on the 850.

In light of above can anyone recommend some decent head guards. I know Steptoe used to do these but haven't heard him having any recently. Any folk got experience of droping their bike on a set and can say if they worked or not.

Yes.. they worked. Ive only dropped my bike at a standstill - the headguard on that side was scuffed. but a rubdown with wet/dry and a quick spray of paint disguised it completely.

Got mine from eBay - as at the time they were out of production - I set up a search and just waited for the email saying a pair had been listed. They were 'as new' - the people who were bidding all seemed to want a bargain. I wanted the guards. so last minute I bid the price Steptoe had originally sold them for. and won them. I actually saved £20 over the original price.. so still a bargain. But.. that was less important to me than getting a set. I was very peeved to have missed them first time round. (no spare cash).

They are excellent. The man took his time in making sure they would fit - each set was drilled by hand and tested first before being sold - very reassuring.

I had the BMW ones on my 850GS. They were a bit of a PITA when it came to servicing the bike because they had to be removed to get the bash plate off. To do this you had to move the tank back; no biggie but still something elase to do. I wouldn't bother with them again; as has been said, good head protectors (not the BMW placky ones) provide sufficient protection IMHO.
