Just about to take my GS off road for it's 1st serious test, need some engine protector bars, how much will I have to pay for dealer to supply and fit?

Torque Wrench

They are easy to fit yourself, all you need is a torque wrench. Less than an hours work.

I bought H&B bars which are great. I dropped my bike first time off road and the engine bars did the job. Also, the bike can be serviced without having to remove the bars.

How much did they cost? Who are H&B?

H&B are Hepco & Becker.

You can buy them from Motobins:

http://www.motobins.co.uk/index.php

Part #: 95616C (silver bars) 95616B if you want black. £110 and £101 respectively.

Don't buy the Wunderlich engine bars because they are actually H&B bars that cost more.

Just curious - why not?

Me too. Is it stood in the garage all the time?

I have H&B on mine and they have done an excellent job. Be aware though that if you like me, 'ahem' suffer from the odd sideways alignment :D they may well get pushed up so much that the cylinder covers cannot be removed with them in place.

Hepco & becker bars are a worthwhile investment and easy to fit - follow the destructions and remember to only undo one engine bolt at a time.
Essential fitments on a boxer twin as i really don't fancy dropping it on its cylinder barrels / heads, regardless of whether BM says they'll take it. The way I looked at it was that I would surely drop the thing at some point, simply cos its such a behomoth - this I have now done and the engine bars were the only thing that got scratched. Plus saves you loosing paint off your rocker boxes when filtering!

Hi K12,
I got side swiped by an Audi on the rudmore roundabout in Pompey last year thanks to a clueless motorist. The H-B engine bars on my R1200 saved both me and the bike from any damage, I just lost a scraping of powder coat from the engine bars thats all. The Audi came off substantially worse with two knackered door skins. Had I been on my Yamaha I would have probably ended up in hospital with a broken right leg. IMHO a set of quality engine bars are essential on a GS to protect your pride and joy and your legs too.

They've also came in handy a few times during light off-roading when I've dropped the bike at slow speeds on slippery mud. It's quite a strange feeling to confidently drop the GS when you know it will be undamaged compared to all that expensive plastic on sports bikes. If you know your are going down and can't save it, just hit the killswitch as you step off.

If you need help fitting a set of Hepco-Becker engine bars give me a shout as I am quite local (Fareham) and have the tools needed etc having done the job twice now. Fitting takes about 25 minutes to do yourself, don't bother with a dealer just order a set and do the spanner work yourself and save money for more toys.

'Standard' BMW bars

There seems to be some resistance to the standard bars as supplied. I suppose they are more expensive than the others; I have almost always had the standard bars fitted when I bought a bike. When I chnage it I stipulate (after all the negotiations are completed) '.....I expect you to fit the standard bars on the new model because the present ones won't transfer. ' It has worked every time.

Here's the Hepco and Becker bars:

I was able to install them myself easily, even though the directions weren't in english. Fortunately I was able to read the torque values. If someone is looking for nice durable bars, these darn sure fit the bill.

The Dealer sold me H & B bars for my 1200. He said that they were better and cheaper than the BMW bars.

I know that some guys don't like engine crash bars, but I think it just make sense to have them. :thumb

Engine and tank

Buy the engine and tank bars from Motobins H&B. Take half an hour to fit.that way you have all the protection, somewhere to hang lights and and a ADV look a like :D
Dont buy BMW ones.
