I want to get the engine casing powder coated due to BMW's fantastic anti-corrosion methods on there GS's:mad:.

Question is, if I remove the casing am I into a whole lot of bother?
I know that I will need to replace the gasket seal but will parts and the likes start popping out and flying around the place if I remove the casing? And also does the belt have to come away first?

many thanks in anticipation of responses

Rob

casing

rob i fully understand your wanting to gleam your beemer but to me the beauty of these bikes is the muckier they get the cooler they seem to look, these bikes were built to be ridden not polished, thats why i gave up building one off streetfighters with polished alloy and the like.and thats why i clean my r1100gs with buckets of warm muddy water.best of luck mate:thumb

Hi Rob i have had a great number of bits powder coated for bikes, they look great at first but given a few months the finish goes of they get chipped and water gets underneath and the coating lifts and you finish up touching them up with paint especially on a engine that gets all the crap of the road.
I have found a company that specialises in vehicle restoration http://www.frost.co.uk/ they sell a engine enamel called POR50 Its an American product very high heat resistant and they guarantee it permenant.
I did the cylinders on my 1150gs 2years ago and use it through the winters and it looks like it was painted yesterday nothing sticks to it and is easy to keep clean.
The downside is the price it is £19 per litre and is made in several colours including black & alluminium (the alluminium is as near to the original colour as you will get)

Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated. Will take it on board. BTW Nighttrunker, that POR stuff does look good and may be worth a look. Not too keen on postage costs of £22 to Ireland though. Seems a bit steep for a tin of paint.:thumb

A bit steep, thats bloody extortionate,as a matter of interest i have a new tin in the garage(its not for sale) i will take it to the post office on Monday get it weighed and let you know what they will charge for postage to Dublin.

I am heading off to France on Sunday for a couple of weeks so don't go out of your way on my account, but a very kind gesture none the less.

I might keep searching the net til tomorrow night in the hope of finding something that will do a good job as I started to take the forks off tonight to replace the seals and then decided in a moment of madness to strip the front end off the bike in order to get parts sprayed up or powder coated on my return from holidays.:blast

I used POR15 on my rusty old camper years ago - it's expensive but it does the job very well :thumb2
