Im having the front engine cover replaced under warranty.

I remember someone saying that there was a grease that you could put on the treads of the bolts that hold the engine cover on that stops the cover bubbling up near the bolts.

Anyone remember what it is?

Not sure how grease around the bolts would help.

I had my engine cover replaced under warranty after 18 months and it has corroded again now.

I recently took the black panel off and found that ALL the paint inside was flaking off. What I could see around the bolt heads was only a fraction of the corrosion.

I think water gets in from the top of the black plastic cover - it is not water tight.

I have heard that removing the foam sound insulation reduces the tendancy to corrode.

My solution was to repaint with Hammerite - hopefully that is more resistant than the crap engine paint BMW use.

There is a grease (sorry, can't remember it's name) which is sold by boating supply peeps. It helps to prevent the electrolytic reaction between disimilar metals (cover and bolts).

As has been said, do not replace the foam insert as this just acts as a sponge and makes matters worse.

Engine Cover

Hi,

This seems to 'ring a bell' with me - Manufactured by Rolcol

ANTI-SEIZE PRODUCTS
ANTI SEIZE STAINLESS

High temperature nickel free anti seize compound, specifically designed for use on stainless steel and nimonic alloy fasteners. Temperature range -40ºC to +1000ºC

Product number 14143

Don't mean to 'hijack' the Thread, but is it a difficult job to remove the cover in order to do a clean up and re spray ?

Regards,

John

Duralac is the gear. :thumb

Looks like a liquid putty, stops galvainc reactions between differing metals. Buy it from Lotus Elise parts suppliers, they are much cheaper than Yacht Chandlers. A tin from EliseShop.com ( I think it was them) was about half the price that my local chandler wanted for a small tube.

I coated my new cover (changed under warranty) with Waxoil including under the bolts and left it overnight to solidify. Don't get it on the belt... Then used ACF 50 on the sticky out bits. God knows if it will do any good but we'll see.
If you're repainting, Hammerite smooth silver is a good match.
