Had the RHS cylinder head replaced on my 2005 12gs this in September and got the 18,000 mile service done at same time. Now to add to a growing list of problems, I experiencing engine cutting out. Usually at low speed, it's happened 4 times in the last two outings. Once when crossing busy junction on A3... With the exception of the last occassion when I had to paddle bloody quickly to get out of the way of a fast approaching lorry, I can pull in clutch and restart before having to even put a foot down. Back at home and once again seems to be starting okay.

Has anyone any ideas as to what this might be caused by, I keep reading about fuel pump controllers but as a confirmed Ludite, I am completely mechanically ignorant?

P.S. For a machine that has given so much hassle, why do I love it so...?

Fault coud be caused by faulty Cam Shaft Position sensor.(this is mounted in the rear of the RH cylinder). I had exactly the same problem earlier this year. Only happened at low speed/revs. Diagnosed by NoG and fixed under warranty. It takes about 5 mins to change the sensor.

I had this happen on my '04 bike. Replacing the lambda sensors cured the problem. In fact, they had to replace 3 before it was finally eradicated.

Sorry to be thick Schtum but what is a lambda sensor - sounds like something from Strictly Come Dancing?

You have a fevered imagination, grasshopper.....:rob

If you look on the exhaust header pipes of your R1200GS, you'll see that in each one there's a thing that looks a bit like a spark plug with a wire attached to the top of it. These are the lambda sensors.

Their other name is O2 sensors. They detect oxygen levels in the exhaust and this is used as an input to the ECU's fuel map when the bike is running in "closed loop" mode at low revs (I confess that I don't know the point at which the ECU switches from closed loop to open loop mode, ie the point at which it stops using information from the lambda sensors as a feedback on how accurate the mixture is and switches to just the fuel map in the ECU but I suspect it's somewhere around 4,000 rpm and varies with throttle opening.)

You can see how, if the ECU is getting inaccurate information about the fuelling at low revs it can upset the throttle-off running and lead to stalling.

Well, you certainly can learn something new every day. Thanks guys

Hi Mate,

I guess your machine is out of warranty, where in Hampshire are you. If your close to me your welcome to pop over to mine and I can read any fault codes you got which will point to the problem or give us a clue.

Hi EasySushi (what a tag!) many thanks for the offer. I'm up near Haslemere/Hindhead (Devil's Punchbowl) Timing might be a bit tricky but love to have a go. It's booked in next Wednesday so before that would be good if you are free? Do you want my mobile so we can arrange?

Hi Mate,

I'm only down the road from you, Headley. Whats you mobile number.

Check the throttle body sinc If the 2 throttle cables are way out of sinc the bike will cut stall like you described.

Just a thought but is it worth me getting a Haynes manual (or alternative if there is one) that gives good clear illustrations so I can learn a little re what all these wonderful things people refer to actually are?

Manuals

Get a Clymer far more detail.
Dave gs (or better still get an 1150!)
