Random Engine Cutting out

I would as a form a preventative maintenance. Coil packs can break down and degrade over time.

We had a BMW 3 series in the family and we replaced each coil pack individually at breakdown, a real PITA. If I had known then what I know now I would have replaced all 4 and plugs at the same time. Being a 4 cylinder you could only barely limp to a garage for repair if away from home.

I have a 6 cylinder BMW car and the two inner coil packs are the ones that break down (hottest?). Maybe after 70-80 K miles. Now I replace all 6 coil packs at a time. I have had the car since 40K miles and now on 230K miles so I kinda know the behaviour.

So if you can stretch to replacing the pair do it. Very difficult to judge how much time left on a coil, bit like a plug.
Thanks, yeh this was my thinking.

I also love the 6 cylinders, got a couple an older 535d and a late 2016 530d love them. Did have a 530e for a while 2020 but it was just haemorrhaging money in depreciation. For a 4cylinder it was a lovely car just dash and buttons I couldn’t also get on with so opted back to an f10..

I just went and tried with lowers disconnected and think I have narrowed it down to one upper coil pack.

Is it best to swap out in pairs?
Did you actually ride the bike or just start it up.
The reason I asked is that when one of my main coils started breaking down whilst I was in France, the bike always started fine and ran ok.
But as soon as I tried to use more than about a third throttle it would bog down.
I could coax it up to about 70-80 mph like this but that was about it, no hard acceleration. I carried on for the rest of my trip and got it home.
I Replaced both main coils and it was instantly cured.
It will run on just the secondary coils but you won't be able to actually ride it normally on the road.

As per the post on the anyone got a coil pack

Move it to the other side does the problem stay or move?

more tricks on the post in the Linky above
Yeh, that’s what I did, so it was hard to tell on left CH so moved it to the right. The right I knew worked as I could hear a difference when it was disconnect.

So with the suspect left unit in the right it made no difference when plugged or unplugged so I believe it’s faulty.

I did get a shock when it was on the left which would suggest a breakdown in insulation on the suspect one as a guess.

Cheers for help as normal. 👍
