Had to recover the bike back to the dealers today due to intermittent engine stalling/stopping when changing down gears. Very scary and dangerous. The bike has done this three times in 1100 miles and there seems no rhyme nor reason. The first time with just 60 miles on the clock then again at 1,020 and again at 1,030. Has anybody else had this problem and has it been rectified? It seems to happen when blipping the throttle whilst changing down.

No shift assist and I live in Aberdeenshire so no Hilltop you southerner! It has happened three times, two blipping the throttle and once when pulling off!

I still believe it is down to poor fuelling running so lean that it cannot run correctly

Could be as simple as a sensor not calibrated correctly to the bike, when the garage changed my cruise control switch they forgot to calibrate the throttle so it did not work! I don't think the fuelling is that bad on the GS.

Hope they get it sorted quickly, keep us posted!

Does anyone out there use additives to help with the lean fueling? I've heard that a product called Star Tron improves the complete running performance of engines and has in one case eliminated this stalling issue. A fault not uncommon to other BMW models. I had never come across this problem before buying the bike!

sounds like the wrong technique for down change using the air assist ! thought you just rolled off , knocked down and rolled on again ? if your blipping on downshifts you might be "giving false info " to the already lean running sensor .

I wouldn't advise any additives on a bike this new.

Get it booked onto the dealer for a a software update, this will correct any sensor issues

If you mean Gear Assist, then he has said he doesn't have it. Neither have I and I always blip the throttle when downshifting, second nature and no stalling.
I would suggest that it needs plugging in to the almighty computer and let the dealers sort it out under warranty.

Its at the dealers now and I have a BMW 5 series sat in the drive as a courtesy. So boring. I have been riding bikes for 35 years and blipping, as mrtee43 says, is done without thinking. Lets hope the computer says 'yes'. Crash protection is one thing but additives! Jeez.

Cut out issue

In answer to your questions, Yes I have had the problem & No It hasn't been rectified. Seems to happen when the engine's hot & bike usually re-starts on the button. Haven't tried letting clutch out to bump start it.
I've also experienced this, twice in the last year on my GSLC & Yesterday on a brand new GSALC demo bike. (Twice this week strangely enough, lucky me!)
It's a cut out rather than a stall (stalls occur in gear) it happened to me as soon as I'd pulled the clutch in 3rd gear to change down, engine just died but instantly started on the button again. Reported it to dealer, hadn't heard of the problem, whether they'll chase it up I'm not sure.

Mine occasionally "cuts out" ie when I pull the clutch lever with the throttle closed, the engine dies as opposed to a "stall" which happens in gear when the load is too great for the engine e.g setting off from a junction in 6th gear!
I suffered one while test riding the GSA, reported it to BMW customer services as a safety issue, no one seemed interested. I was told that the official way to report issues is via the dealer network (told them too)
Here's an earlier thread on the subject http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php/356717-Intermittent-cut-out:mad:

It has happened to me once on my 2015GS, last week when slowing for a roundabout and changing from 3rd to 2nd - I nearly always blip, but has happened occasionally on my previous LC, twin-cam and my original 1200, it happened without blipping too, just simple down changes when slowing for junctions and roundabouts - it seems to be a 'characteristic' of the 1200s and just happens rarely for no explanation. I hope it doesn't happen on mountain hairpins in Austria and Italy this summer because that could be very dangerous! I can't fathom it, it feels like the engine management gets a little confused under a particular set of circumstances and 'forgets' to add fuel or spark.

BMW must be aware of this but I suspect they don't have a fix.

Obvious grounds for rejecting the bike on safety grounds.

Has anyone actually put their bike back to the dealer to fix? I can't believe there are riders out there waiting for sh*t to happen. Do you not value your lives?

Mines been back twice to Chandlers for this, its a 2013 GS. They can't find anything but last visit they did find that the exhaust flap in the system had seized half open/shut so now have a new set of very shiny headers (on warranty) and it has not cut out again since! I blip on change downs but it has cut out pulling away almost like a stall. Up hill from lights turning right...character forming. I am now pretty quick to get to the start button. Have posted about this before but thought it was an "older model thing."

Cutting out & GSAP Blipping

Hi,
I have had 2 cut outs; once starting off (didn't end well), and once going 3 to 2 with GSAP. On the 3 to 2 I got the engine going again.
Important question - should the engine blip on every downshift with the the GSAP?
Could be a software problem, as when the cut outs occurred, the engine was also difficult to start; this was after a visit to the dealer to fit a new GSAP.
Now, it is back to firing up quickly; without a dealer visit!
Oh, forgot to say; 2015 LC Adv

The non GSAP bikes do it too, whether of not you blip.
