Engine cutting out..

My old 1998 Diversion 900 had a fixed ignition map & spark retarded to suit low octane fuel. It was absolutely no better on posh than normal petrol.
The 1200 Hexhead has knock sensors. It does improve with posh.
At high revs a few seconds of pre-ignition can cause serious damage. So how does the LC set it's spark advance for best efficiency without engine damage?

Dunno - maybe it doesn't have to advance the ignition as far to get the same efficiency by changes in the combustion chamber shape, valve overlap, compression ratio etc????????? But wouldn't higher octane petrol give one more of a safety margin?
