Have a 2014 TE which this morning decided to cut out at about 25mph whilst filtering in traffic. The dash was still working so it hadn't lost power from the battery, but the engine cut out as tacho showed zero. Had to coast the side of the road, stop and select netural and it restarted fine. The starter switch wouldn't operate whilst in gear and rolling (side stand was up). I take it that's normal?

Mine's done this once in 700 miles, but I could start mine with the sidestand up and in gear.

Normal NO, safe NO, acceptable NO, BMW found cure\believes us NO, happens to us WC owners YES.

There are several threads on this already...best bet is to avoid cheap\Shell gas...use Chevron only.

Other than that consider removing the CAT if the problem persists past 2,000 miles.

Exactly the same thing happened to me this morning. Third time in 5,500 miles. I only use shell vpower. It's clearly not an isolated issue.

Say it as it is :D

Chevron is Texaco in these parts.

My 2013 lc has also cut out maybe 3/4 times over 1000mls. Cant decide wether its cuting out because im not giving it enough gas at the time. Always at low revs so its probably me. Also removing the cat will make no difference, ive got acrapovic headers and its cut out once or twice since i installed headers. Big twins have a tendency to just stop turning over whenever they feel especially at low revs and small throttle input. Always cover the clutch when riding slow just in case. Would say big v-twins are worst for stalling when least expected and throwing you over the bars again always at low revs/small throttle input..... cover the clutch.

There is a micro switch on the clutch lever that should allow you to start in gear/side stand up. I've had this fail on one of my GSA's.

Simple test, put it in gear, pull the clutch in and press the button, it should start, if it doesn't get that switch checked.

As for starting while rolling, I can't comment on the WC, but I'm sure I've done that a couple of times while passing horses on my hex head without issue, I can't see why it shouldn't work for the WC

can I ask why the quality of the fuel should make a difference? In fairness I've never used supermark fuel. Would "super unleaded" make a difference?

mine cut out twice today on my way to work! concerned.

I'm prepared to put up with it as my Diavel used to do the same. I think it's because they run very lean and as mentioned being a twin more susceptible to this.

Mine cut out today on a lunchtime trip into Cambridge to buy some black and white film for my son - slowly coming up to a junction 2nd down to 1st and the engine just cut - I kept rolling and re-started on the button, no drama just a bit odd - perhaps the fuelling system has an untintended non-maskable interrupt in the fuel injection routine - bloody software :D

Dealer tells all customers not to use SHELL and after a couple of tanks i would not use it again...Chevron (Techron) seems to help we have 91 RON over here.

Other than that i think its a combo of lean fuel mix and CAT back pressure causing blowbacks which just stuff the engine out.

yup. throttle calibration at dealer seems to have worked for now.

pull in clutch, it will restart in gear. dont all bikers know this ?

Supermarket fuel is exactly the same as branded, just not delivered in the same tanker ;)

My bike did it once, before the first service, but it wasn't too dramatic. My lightning fast reactions had it fired up within a nanosecond, and I was on my merry way.:D

My bike went through a stalling phase but would always start on the button with clutch pulled in. It not doing that ATM but it has since developed a micro switch problem.
It feels like a brake is dragging with 95 RON and posh petrol gives me more miles per £ than plain fuel. As I used to live near a Shell station I've almost always V-Power with zero problems over at least 20K on the stuff. The 1200 Hex has knock sensors so it makes sense to use the higher octane fuels. The LC can't have stepped back in time so posh petrol should also suit it better.

It doesn't have knock sensors so cant make used of 98 octane - but posh petrol does give me a few more mpg, maybe it is more slippy :D
