Okay, searched for this because I'm sure I've seen it before but can't track it down. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Twice this morning the engine on my '03 ADV cut out. On both occasions I was changing down into first as I approached traffic lights and on both occasions I had kept the clutch in a little longer than normal and was coasting for a couple of yards because the rain had washed some loose stuff nto the space I was crossing and I didn't want to put power on the back wheel while the surface under it was iffy. I had closed, or almost fully closed, the throttle both times as well, I think - certainly on the second one. Clutch was hard against the grip each time. The engine just slowed and died.

The bike had warmed up (six bars on the RID) and was running happily up to that point. Both times it started happily again first press of the button.

It has done this a couple of times before but I was due to adjust the valves and balance the throttle bodies (and tickover was around 850rpm so I knew that needed to be tweaked) so I put it down to "out of adjustment". When I did the work the problem seemed to go away. This time I haven't got that excuse - the bike had a combined annual/18,000mile service at BMW Battersea last Thursday.

The battery is in a poor state - there's a new one sitting in the cupboard waiting for a fair day on a weekend and a low level of fuel in the tank to make the swap. The bike has ABS and servo brakes so that's going to be a good thing to do...

Any ideas?

Have you also lost any power at the top end? And has it done it when you pull up at junctions etc?
Mine has had similar and the Halls sensor has now been changed and is fine, didn't ahppen all the time, but it was nice enough to stall as I turned into a junction slow and with the clucth in, down she went.... Slow speed so no damage. If it is the hall sensor, expect any stealer to charge £150 just for the bit....

Mine's 53 with 27k

My 1100 still does that every once in a blue moon.I changed the hall sensors about three years ago,and it's only done it a couple of times since then.Always starts first hit of the button afterwards as well, don't even need to put my feet down most times.I'm just ignoring it now and I was getting very good at it untill you reminded me I was forgetting about it.Bugger

I'm commuting - I only get out of second for about five minutes each journey...

Hall sensor. Sounds reasonable. Wonder if my extended warranty has run out yet? Sometime soon I know. I'll check tonight and if not I'll be on the phone to Battersea tomorrow - it's worth a try...

Thanks folks.

Sorry Vern.
