Knoking

Hello

Is there any scientific way to check is an engine is knocking? I’m now with a bore diam of 97mm, single spark and hi compression 10,5:1 (?). In the cylinders I get something like 11-12 bar.

In these conditions and with 95 octane should be starting to have knocking problems but honestly I cannot identify it.
So… any way to chek it?

Can't you hear it? OK, it's an oilhead, but if I give my 1150 a big handful of throttle uphill at low revs in a high gear it makes a pretty distinctive noise. So I don't, mostly.

As he says load the engine make it work almost labour it if it's gong to knock you will hear it. You can produce the same noise by advancing the spark. Not to be advised and don't ask how I know. JJH

why yes the big end gave way and she put a leg out of the bed. dont worry I took out the 2 pieces and hammerd them straight super glued them together and put them back on. while I was doing that I noticed a bit of play in the big end. Dont worry because I borrowed some cooking foyle and put it in. I then repaired the crank cases with chemical metal. As you know this is stronger than the origional. I was tempted to scrap the rest of the cases and use the metal in a tube. Alas I was running short and you were on your way. Of course the piston had hit the valves but i sorted that as well. I polished the gouges out of the piston with a brillo pad on the end of my hammer drill. The valves were straightend out with a few well aimed blows from my thrusty lump hammer. After 3 or 4 years it seems to have held up quite well. Your garentee is now up. Did you notice any other improvements? If you want rid Ill take it off your hands. Say 500 euro and 50 luck. I bought a 800gsa 2 months ago and it brings back memories.JJH

now I know what is knocking...

I've tried "load the engine make it work almost labour it if it's gong to knock you will hear it"

it worked... but it's not probable that it happens in a normal road or off road day... at least with 95 octane

How are the banana skins jjh put in the final drive holding up? I'd heard it was a good fix for excessive backlash.

That's handy. A pair of the missus' nylon tights used to quieten down Cortina gearboxes a treat, but she eventually figured out why I was so keen for a jump just before I put the "for sale" in the local classifieds.
