I got an accident last month resulting crash bars and handlebar severely bent.
Long story short, after the repair job had been done, the engine was started and everything was good.
The next day, the engine was started again, it was running well for the first 2 minutes then suddenly it started rattling.
The oil level stays high. Is it lubrication system failure? What is your best guess?
I'm about ready to strip down the engine.

Short video showing oil level and rattling sound

I'm no expert but my experience is that the oil level should drop in the sight glass when the bikes running. It points towards oil pump failure or similar. If it was my bike, I wouldn't start it until the problem was sorted.

I'm sure someone with more experience in these matter will be along soon. Good luck.

Does the oil level rise once the engine is switched off ? That oil looks fresh, did they change the oil when doing the repair work ? If so and they poured in the correct specified amount of oil it fills the oil sight glass. Also if there was no oil circulating/pressure itd making a one hell of a lot more noise :D

Looks more like ATF than engine oil.

ring ins. company , take it back .
hidden damage .
I think this is a sensible move!!

if you put a spanner to it ? Then its on you not them

I don;t like the look of that oil

I think If they say Bog off I would be buying a gallon of the proper Oil

WHY is there a pan of oil below it ??

Exactly my question , ;)

If you look closely the oil may be circulating, you can see the level move, and the top right feed bubbles

The noise sounds similar to what i had on my hexhead some years ago, very thin cheap oil and high temps

a change to fresh oil and valve clearances checked and and set and it was a swiss watch :D

Could the high level be due to the oil not going through the cooler ?

To all the oil colour comments ;)

Red oil :thumb

Clearly filling your tractors with el cheapo crude has blinkered you lot :jes

OIl technology has moved on a long way :)

How come you use 10/50 rather than 15/50?
Curious (not accusing)

I'm not sure why anyone would put such fancy (expensive) oil in an air cooled BMW :duno
Because it only cost £38 for 4 litres
as opposed to £48 for any offering from either Opie or the bay and then there was postage too

I wont use Opie ever again after the poor customer service i received following 4 botched delivery attempts
(There only responsible for the product not the service provided by the carrier ! even though it's there choice of carrier)

Simple really

The range for my bike 2011 TC is from

5W/40 to 10W/50

The low figure is not the one to worry about its the upper one

40 grade in very hot weather ends up like water, and the hexheads clatter like buggery

The 50 grade means the oil stays a bit thicker and the bike runs quieter

The 10W gives me some leeway in the winter (i could do 5W/50) but happy with 10W/50

The oil level rise only slightly once the engine is switched off.
It is fresh oil. When the engine started rattling, I drained the oil to check for any debris and put new oil in. It is 15w50.
It rattled both on old or new oil. Oil pressure warning light was off though.

Btw, I did the repair my self after the accident. It was only cosmetic. The engine looked good though and didn't need any touch.
I wonder if the impact caused any problem in the lubrication system. I'm not sure but this engine should be quite bullet proof.

Hard to diagnose via a video.

Could it be a camchain tensioner problem causing it to rattle (eg slack cam chain, broken tensioner blade etc) ??

When the end float on my 2008 hexhead was out of spec it made a noise just like that when hot. Started cold it was quiet but then made a racket when hot. I would check and adjust valve and end float clearance.

Never owned a bmw boxer that as soon as the engine was started that the oil level didn't immediately drop below the level of the sight glass , once switched off the level would rise back to its level after 3 or 4 minutes.
