I'm looking at buying an 1150GS from trade. The bike was stolen / recovered - hence a lowered price.

I need to know about engine numbers - could someone tell me the format of the engine numbers - i.e. length and placement on the engine. Also are there any letters within the "engine number", or is it purely made up of numbers.

The bike is silver with a red saddle - is this a standard colour combination? Also does anyone know of the going price for a black saddle.

Thanks for any help you can offer

Silver/red

Andy VFR (you'll have to change that quickly!!!)

Titan Silver metallic with red seat certainly was a standard combination - don't know about the price of a black seat as I quite like my red one - goes well with the silver tank.

As for the engine number, it is located on the right hand side of the engine, just in front of the right hand cylinder.

That wouldn't be one for sale at RS Motorcycles in Essex would it ? If so, be very very careful. Read the thread in the "Dealers" forum caled "RS Motorcycles, Essex init". One of our number (Mr. Tickle) almost bought this bike, but fortunately backed off at the last minute.

If this is another bike, apologies for raising concern. Where is the one you have spotted ?

Thanks guys for replying. Yes this bike is the infamous one from RS Motorcycles. Thanks for directing me to the previous thread. Just to add to the bike's list of woes it has a stuck front caliper and the engine numbers seem somewhat interesting (as if re-stamped) - this was the reason for the original post.

The number on the engine is made up of 7 numbers and 3 letters but on the HPI check was only made up of 8 numbers. I'd still like to know what is normal.

As I'm stubborn i'm still vaguely considering the bike and would like some advice:
1) Is the touratech handlebar stop a replacement for the original? What's the advantage? Do the handlebars have stops in the usual place (Like a VFR!!)
2) How much does the spider frame cost?

Thanks again for any help you can offer,

Andrew

Andy,

In case no-one else says it - STAY AWAY FROM IT. You'd be a bloody fool to saddle yourself with something as iffy as that nail.

A suggestion with the seat...

Try swapping it with someone with a black saddle who wants to re-cover or customise - there's a few people around looking to do this and they won't care too much.

Otherwise, buy a black saddle from www.siebenrock.de. I paid about £100 inc shipping from them last year. I guess that's what someone should pay for yours too.

The TT steering stop is a add on have a look on the TT site for
explanation of use.
The spider frame, don't know should'nt be too much
3 - 2 - 8 Numbers/letters/numbers that's on mine.
This bike must be cheap for anybody to consider

numbers

Andy,

If you really want to know, I have a reference book in my bag at work with the break down of numbers for EVERY modern motorbike.......I'll bring it home if I remember. Got one for cars too if you fancy buying a moody too.

Foolishly I'm stiil interested in this bike, and I'm thinking of taking another look (after all it doesn't hurt to look!)

However I'm getting more and more suspicious about the engine number on the bike concerned. It doesn't match up with the engine number on the HPI check (the number of letters and numbers is all wrong) Therefore I'd still be very grateful if one of you lucky R1150GS owners out there could let me know the sequence of of letters and numbers on your engine!

I must admit I'm having strong doubts about this bike so finding out if the engine is suspect would be a big help.

Thanks

Andy

No I didn't buy it!

I'll put a more detailed response under the thread 'RS Motorcycles', under dealers. Thanks all those who gave advice though.

By the way the advert has gone from Bike Trader - has somebody else bought it or has it just expired from being there so long!
