Having read numerous threads on oil types, viscosity, brand etc. and also on the benefits of fresh oil, I'm considering doing an interim change at 3k miles. I also do, in the winter, most of my journeys in town.

Now.........before I disappear under a pile of replies saying "don't bother, it's easily meant to last 6k miles" I only said I'm thinking about it!!

So, my questions:

1. Is this easy to do on a 1200, and do any instructions exist? I've done a search, found nowt.

2. What tools/kits do I need?

3. Is it worth it? I've read that a few of the good members of this forum swear by it.

4. I've never changed the oil on any bike before. Should I not even bother, walk away and save myself a load of grief?

I think changing the oil is an easy job, but it depends how familiar you are with working on bikes, I guess.

the tools you'll need are:

Spanner to remove bash plate.

Allen key to remove drain plug

Oil filter tool to remove oil filter.

The last one is the hardest to come by, due to the restricted access to the filter on the 1200. I bought a Halfords own brand tool and "modified" it with an angle grinder :D

Tools not included, it should cost you about £25 to do the job - so you can answer the "is it worth it" question by asking your local dealer how much they would charge :)

Cheers

Gotta be worth a try. Any further guidance on the, er, modifications to the Halfords filter tool or is it obvious once I see it?
