engine painting

hi all i know this has been covered many times in search forum . The general advise seems to be to paint with hammerite silver smoothrite . Just wondered if anyone has done this and what the long term results have been like . Me gs 1100 needs a bit of tlc . Many thanks

trouble with hammerite is u cant touch up over it for ages , it reacts, wats it like for staining, ?

As you've seen. plenty have done this.. some just to disguise minor damage.. some to repaint virtually the entire engine.

as with all paint jobs - preperation is half the battle. get the surface right and the paint job will last. I have seen some engines that it was impossible to tell the 'new' against the 'old'.

Funnily enough, I've just emerged from the garage after re-painting the front engine cover of my K75 (among other bits).

Simonez Tough Black Satin is a good match for the black engines, they do a silver but I can't vouch for the matching qualities of that.

Silver smooth Hammerite is a good match. Easier to use that the Simonez because it's okay to re-coat fairly soon after application.

I've used it on a mates 1100GS, I did the forks:

and the rocker-covers (among other bits):

Did my front cover @ cylinder heads 4 years ago (40,000 mile)& still look good, lost its shine

I used a hot air gun on preporation to get the loose paint off as its like plastic coating and had the engine warm not hot when i painted it

no matter what you do they end up looking shocking after a while, best just ride
and forget

ive used this stuff on several projects engines down the years and it is the dogs danglys,great finish and really tough as well

PJ1 is fatastic stuff.... i have painted exhausts,silencers, and whole engines with it...

the satin black and gloss black are brilliant!


the silver PJ1 however is shite! it comes out a dull grey... had a tin for years and cant find a use for it


hammerite silver spray is my choice.... engine front cover, top yoke, and lower fork legs still looking pretty good on the 1150

preparation is the key! good prep = good finish

If you are after a flat black finish, black board paint is great on engines.

Done a few engines over the years, very heat resistant and hard wearing and easy to re-touch

Thanks to one and all for there advice and pictures . Guess im going for the hammerite seems the best option and gives a good finish . As you say prep is the key . Will post some pictures of the final result . Off to the garage now to burn the midnight oil . thanks again . Dave

Ive got the chance of having the front cover and valve covers powder coated.

Any good or safe to do?

How difficult to get the front cover off?

Personal preference, I'd go for re-painting areas that are going to be exposed to stone chips and the crap thrown-up by the wheel.

Powder-coat is good but the drawback with it is that it's prone to cracking and splitting under impact. Moisture then gets under the coating and works its mischief unseen until one day the coating starts to fall off in scabs.

Once it chips, it's difficult to effect a local repair and the only real way to deal with it is to remove it all and start again.

Powder-coat seems a lot softer and more prone to scratching than the tougher paint finishes. Scratches don't polish out either.

Paint at least allows you to do local repairs, it's easy to do, cheaper and although corrosion creeping under it is possible, you can at least see it early enough to remedy.

Powder-coat is fine on frames and components not exposed to wear IMHO.

I'll second that about the PJ1 silver - total crap, but the satin balck is ace
I've yet to discover Hammerite spray paint out here in the boondocks - the brush stuff is horrible to use IMHO though...

Have dealt with them years ago but postage to S. Ireland is £22 - to the North only £9 kind of put me off....
