I'm proposing to paint my 03 1150GS engine casing (not the pots) in black. Can anyone recommend a suitable paint that will withstand the the heat of the engine & winter salt/grit.

Can anyone recommend a good match for the silver on the heads/barrels? Is there an easy way of sanding in between the fins?

I'm in the middle of doing this job on my 850 and have found that a wire brush isn't really effective between the fins as the wires are parallel to the surfaces you need to work on rather than perpendicular to them.

I settled on using wet'n'dry folder over and over until it was thick enough to be a tight fit between the fins - slide that backwards and forwards a few times and it works well and quickly.

It's the main engine cases that are causing me the most grief - they're a bugger to rub down (wish I had a lift.....) with all their nooks and crannies. As they say, though, it's all in the preparation.

When I prepared this engine for painting:

I wrapped emery paper around a piece of wood and then did the same with wet & dry to get between the fins.

Thanks for information so far. Is there anything brush-on in black that doesn't need to be oven baked. Frost products require baking, & my oven aint big enough. I would preffer to do the job in-situ if possible.

Thanks for the advice. I have used silver smoothrite before and it has yellowed slightly due to the heat, had anyone else had this?

Yes but only slightly around the exhaust ports on the heads of that 2-Valve Boxer.

It's no worse than the same slight yellowing of the powder-coat in the same place on later 4-Valve Boxers (but easier to remedy).
