My engine plate was starting to show signs of corrosion after 21,000 miles/18 months so my dealer arranged to have it replaced it at the next service, under warranty, no problem :thumb
I took it in yesterday for its service and was told that they couldn't get a replacement plate from BMW. Apparantly, BMW changed the supplier after they had all the trouble with the original plates, but it seems that the plates from the new supplier are experiencing the same problems
Maybe BMW are now looking at a bit of a re-design before they start replacing any more. I'll still get my new plate, but only when the 'improved' ones are released. :clap

OH B*GG*R! :( :(

I had my plate replaced just after BMW had sacked the first supplier. Thought I was safe with the new one.

I think you only need to read the previous Engine Plate Corrosion thread to answer that question
As my BMW dealer told me... They're trying to find a definitive solution to the problem at the moment, which is why they're not replacing my plate with a (current) new one. I would think yours will corrode in due course :(
On the bright side, by the time your 2-year warranty is up, BMW SHOULD have solved the problem and you can have an 'improved' version fitted free of charge :clap

I've just noticed that the plate on mine has just started corroding. Spoke with Rainbow and was told that there is a technical hold on this part because BMW are trying to source a new supplier.....FYI: the bike is a 55 plate with less than 3k on the clock and cleaned after every outing :(

Engine Plate

Now that explains why my dealer could not get the part in for me. Trouble was the engine plate was only one of four (corrosion on cylinder cover, corrosion on rear brake pedal and 2nd replacement top box and bracket) that I need done. They tried to say I should wait and do all four in one hit - but I mentioned that I am off for my European tour soon so they needed to do the top box at least asap - which they did. So call still outstanding.

Like the rest hopefully the new ones will solve the long tgerm problems - my warranty runs out in March - will they get the part in before then?

Engine plate
I know this is old subject but my dealer tells me these plates are'nt availible yet, BMW have modified them so they are painted over entire surface instead of having exposed machined faces where bolts and black cover fits.Any updates on this please? its just that I feel dealer is trying to delay fitting new cover as long as possible so when that one corrodes the bike wiil be out of warranty. They have suggested I wait until spring so it has one less winter to survive !

Engine Plate

I had my front engine plate replaced 2 weeks ago by NOG. Had been waiting for it since August. I decided yesterday that I would remove the securing bolts and coat them with JC5a jointing compound(used in the aviation industry as an interfay between alloy skins etc) to try to stop the dissimilar metal corrosion between the bolts and the plate. There were no exposed areas on the plate from maching, so maybe BMW have got it sorted-i'll wait and see.
Engine and lower areas of bike are now coated in Waxoil as winter is arriving!

I was at my dealers several weeks ago and he showed be a 'new improved' engine plate. He said that they had been waiting a while for them to arrive and that they had several people waiting to have the work done, but the supply problem was no longer an issue.
Don't be bullied by your dealer. I do believe they are using delaying tactics.Tell him you aren't prepared to wait until the spring and that you didn't buy a so called quality product to have it slowly corrode away in front of you. Ring a couple of other dealers and enquire how long it would take them to get te part in for you, then tell your dealer where he can get it.
Best of luck and keep us posted with any news.

Battersea ordered a new engine plate for me back in Spetember, apparently. I haven't heard from them since, naturally.

Cannon's in Braintree replaced mine under warranty about a month ago. I have no idea whether it's a new improved one or an old "likely to corrode again" one. Looks th esame as the original. If it's going to corrode, I hope it does so soon - mine's an 05 and two years will be up next May.

If it takes longer to start corroding, perhaps BMW will do it as a goodwill gesture? Yeah, right.

My warranty was up in October having just had a new plate in black (ST/RT) fitted. Have since found out thanks to this brilliant forum that the black version also goes flaky/furry. Dealer states that if I want to replace it when it does go (this already being my third), it will cost about £260 parts and labour. If/when I do go down this route I hope the mighty BMW have well and truly sorted this appalling quality control issue.

For £260 I would remove the damned thing and get it bead blasted and then hard anodised and repainted and pocket the change.

i noticed my october 06 bike had cutouts at the bottom of the plastic cover ( that covers the engine cover) - presumably to prevent water getting trapped behind. anyone else noted this mod?

If BMW built them to a standard that matched the price they charged for the bike they'd not have to do all this warranty work!
I worry about the 2nd, 3rd & 4th owner of these bikes. Out of warranty and getting a furry load of shite. :rob

Of course you can always buy a brand new Triumph and have a furry, paint peeling load of old shite within a year :D
