Engine protector protectors!

Hi folks, is there such a product that can go over the engine bars to protect them in a fall, or against road crap? I know the bike is meant for off road use before anyone says anything, but for road use it would be handy if you could get some covers that go over the bars (maybe attach by velcro) to protect them against road damage? Any thoughts? If not, I may have to get the wife and the sewing machine together for the afternoon!

anything attached by Velcro is just going to rip right off unless its a straight fall off say the stand. What happens when you damage your protectors? Maybe you need protectors to protect your protectors or alternatively get the bars repainted after an off.

You'll probably find that if you try and integrate 2 different styles of engine bars, then one set would become sacrificial over the other... Trouble is then you are in the same position.. how to protect your outer engine bars...

So you could then get another set of enging bars and fit them over the first 2 to protect them... But then what do you do about protecting them ???

How's about just sticking some engine bars on and then going for a ride.

I wouldn't worry: Had BMW engine bars on for almost 6 years and 50k miles and they haven't rusted or fell to bits, despite a couple or six drops.

You could always zip-tie on some pipe lagging?

I'll probably just leave them bare tbh. It was just a thought. Not that I would even consider it, but you can get leather ones for Harleys that pop together with studs on the back, so I thought there may be an option for fabric ones for the GS.

Very easy answer. Black Ribbed Pond Hose 25mm (1") which is less than £2.00 for a metre. I had some lying about and it fits my H&B engine bars perfectly. You get folk moaning about the paint finish on their bikes but I reckon H&B's paint finish is worse so the hose adds extra protection to the bars and in the case of a tumble you can easily replace it with another piece of hose. Just cut the hose to the required length, and make one slice along the length of the hose and just clip it over the engine bars. The hose is reinforced in the ribbed section and will stay in place by itself.

I had to replace a set of 1200ADV crash bars on a customers bike last year.
The complete bars and mounting frames cost approx £1800.

Would have been a cheaper repair without the crashbars.

I once dropped my bike at a junction when my feet slipped on gravel. Damaged the paint on the bars and therefore made me think what could I put on the crash bars to protect them in case I did the same again. Low and behold I have done it again but this time the hose took the brunt of the fall and no damage to the bars at all. I think that was the sort of solution the OP was looking for.

Personally I think the ribbed hose looks good on the engine bars as do quite a few others that have commented on them. Of course many others will think they are shit looking but then I think the TT Tank SIde protectors in your post are awful looking so each to their own. Opinions are like arseholes, everyone's got one, I was just trying to answer the OPs query

There's so much crap that people put on bikes (in general) that you shouldn't give a damn. Just do what you want. But if the bike keeps falling over I'd either lay off the booze a bit or go on some sort of rider training to stop it happening in the first place

Wunderlich offered a set of crash bar protectors for the 850, 1100 and 1150 GS's and the Adventure but suprisingly didn't offer them for any of the 1200 models.
