Engine rattle/tappet noise?

Advise please.

I recently bought a r80 with 50,000 miles. On overrun it rattles from the right hand side (more like a tappet noise) especially when it’s hot. Under load it's normal, no rattle. I’ve checked the valve clearances and they are within tolerance.

Can you point me in the right direction please?

Check the end float in the rocker arms as well.

That was quick.
Just did a check and I do have more play in the right hand side exhaust rocker, if i pull up and down on it I can get it to knock, the other 3 I cannot.

I have not measured it because I will strip it down to replace the rusty and leaking pushrod tubes and gaskets etc so I'll order some shims at the same time.

Andy,

Undo the two nuts and bend the arms together to take the end float out of it. Not an ideal solution but will let you see if that's your noise.
