Engine rattle?

Hi I have a 7500 mile 1200 which I am not sure if i have an issue or not?

When I start the bike it strikes up fine runs 30-40 seconds then starts rattling, dunno if it sounds like a tappet rattle or a chain type rattle, engine runs for another min or so and it quietens down back to normal no rattle (sometimes takes a couple of mins)reving the engine gently doesnt seem to make it rattle any harder or more it seem s quite constant until it dissapears. if left a few hours it will do it again but say stop for a coffee and a bacon butty and it won't

I have heard it say they all rattle well , my mate has a 2009 adventure and it doesn't rattle like mine lol.

Bike has been dealer serviced from new, I would take it to a dealer to listen too but the bloody thing won't do it unless its left for a few hours and theres no dealers that are near enough for me to just leave it overnight.

Any ideas anyone, whether it be it needs looking at or it be fine leave the bugger alone! lol

There's the answer. GS's, like their owners, are happiest after eating bacon sandwiches, and drinking coffee.

They all rattle like a goodun though, regardless of food or drink.

First things first Dump the oil and find yourself some nice 20W50 and a Mahle or BMW filter

put in 3.8 litres and what happens then ??

No they don't all rattle. Likely is it is cam chain noise. Your cam chain tensioners are either leaking oil that pressurises them (and is stored behind an inbuilt check valve), or there is air locked in em. There are tensioners LHS and RHS one for each cylinder.

Try to listen for which side by using an engineers stethoscope - a screw driver. Put the blade onto a metal part and the plastic handle to your ear.... You'll hear all sorts of noises. Next time it is likely to make the noise listen to both sides of the bike the cam chain tunnels and the slapping side it the offending side.

An oil change with a quality synthetic oil is a good call as it my help the tensioner free up.

The fact that it runs fine (and presumably quietly) for 30-40 seconds suggests to me that it's not the usual 'camchain at startup' noise. The few examples I've heard for myself (and many more descriptions that I've read) suggest that this noise starts immediately on a cold start and disappears almost completely within a second or two once positive oil pressure has been established. If it's only making the noise after 30 seconds or more of running, I would suggest something else is cauisng it.

Thanks or the replys, the noise does seem to be equal both sides but i will have a listen with a screwdriver on the cam chain tunnels to see if one was worse than the other. I thought along the lines of sticky tensioner but it always starts up quite andi would have thought it would rattle from the off like Roymondo, have got a BMW filter so going to change the oil an filter an see what happens

I have a 2012 and mine used to rattle for a few milliseconds from the left pot as it fired up. Did it every time I started it for 6 months. Had its service and it stopped.

Just a wildcard-as it starts fine and then gets noisy perhaps it's the idle steppers trying to adjust. Disconnect them before you start to see what difference it makes.
The oil change does sound a more likely candycake though.

Oh - another thought: Does the rattling noise change significantly (or go away altogether) if you pull the clutch in?

sounds like the oil in one way or another, perhaps the pump is struggling to pull up the oil?

If its ok after its been run a while and for a short while afterwards , the CCT's sound like they are working.

Clutch in or out makes no difference, I changed the oil an filter and....... it doesn't seem any different, actually seems a bit quitter when its warmed up, but the rattle is still there just after start up when she is cold, had the previous owner have a listen and he said its always been like it so I am starting to think along the lines of leave it alone, runs well enough and pulls like a train

My 14000 mile 2010 TC is the same. Start from cold and after about 15 to 20 seconds metallic rattle sound which lasts for a few seconds. Has always done it.
