Engine Vibration

I always kept a small plastic bottle of nikwax visor clean under the seat of my Triumph Explorer in a pump spray, when I got my GS-LC I swapped it from under my Explorer seat to under my GS seat. By the time I'd ridden to the Yorkshire Dales from Scunthorpe the vibrations from the new flat twin had unscrewed the lid from the bottle which then dumped it's contents all over the rear of my new bike.

I had previously done 2 European tours on the super smooth Triumph with the same bottle and no loose lid issues!

However, after a few thousand miles the GS vibes reduced quite considerably, (and I made sure that the lid was very tight on my second bottle of visor clean).

Give your new bike some work and some miles and it will become a lot smoother!

So frustrating BMW just told me after much delving into the mind of a BMW technician That the 2014 GS has a re designed engine casing and different parts to prevent vibration and problems with drivetrain
Great !!!
So all you 2013 owners now have a bike not fit for purpose
Interesting law suit don't you think

So what parts have been changed anyone know:nenau

Don't think my 2013 is too bad but then I also ride a bike with a 750 Norton motor I.E. Matchless G15CSR

The drive shaft Wines like a teenager without a phone if the ride hight is set for pillion solo

Never heard of this before. Do you mean that it whines when in two up, and riding solo?

Yes the whine is apparent if you ride the bike solo after having a pillion with the setting for pre load for the extra weight set high then ride the bike solo without the pillion
The noise is like the gearbox and driveshaft are without oil or worse, there is a bad sounding whine of mashing gears

That's normal. Why would you want to ride the bike solo, in the two up setting?:nenau

Nutty, I find it gives you even quicker steering - It raises the rear of the bike more, the steering really does become flighty like this. Plus some of our heavier brethren choose this option to cope with the extra weight.....

Exactly Titto
I'm 6'5" and quite like the extra leg stretch too but on this model now can't
Nothing to warn you of this in the manual or info at the dealers !
It's for sale now I've had it
Off to buy a Kawasaki or something else better made
Feel cheated buying a 2014 GS now although they are faultless I believe

The clue is at the bottom of the LCD.

One helmet = 1 person, two helmets = 2 persons...simples!

You may struggle to find a Kawasaki that is taller than a GS! :rob

Not at all. There is nothing in the manual that says don't use 2-up mode when only one person on it. At the end of the day it really depends on how heavy you are and how long your legs are.

there are lots of things not mentioned in the manual.

imho : if you used what is not written in the manual as a measure of what you CAN/SHOULD do with your motorcycle , your motorcycling experience will be nothing short of very interesting.

the 1 up and 2 up settings are expressly mentioned in relation to the prevailing load on the motorcycle. It is not mentioned in relation to how long (or short) your legs are.

Lets get real now - no matter what suspension settings you use it should not cause the problem that jseaschippy has reported
