ESA problems...... again.

This has happened to me twice. Each time it has cost £50 at a BMW dealer (SBW Hertford) to fix.

A heavy pillion dismounts from the bike suddenly and the shock moves beyond/outside a limit setting of a transducer. The dealer connects the bike to a GT1, runs a software program to tell the ECU to ignore the out-of-tolerance warning (or whatever) and, hey presto!, it's working again.

Of course, you may not be so lucky.........

Took bike to Motorrad Central in Dalkieth yesterday.....rear shock is F....d. £1000 + VAT for a new shock plus the new shock wont connect with the "old" electronics, so that'll be another £800 approx. Totally pissed off. Has anyone removed ESA and fitted normal shocks ? BMW or Wilbers etc. Advice please.

I read somewhere that to set the suspension you shouldn't be sitting on the bike?

It's about giving the little motors that adjust the preload a chance. If you load the bike up with luggage, tell the missus to hop on the back and then 'Oooo look - I'm on solo setting - I'll just tweek it to two up + luggage...' you're going to really stress the poor little buggers whilst they try and shift over 150 kilos. Give them a chance and make your adjustments either off the bike or (if it's just you on board) at least with your feet on the floor.

Wilbers do one. Contact John at Revs suspension @£630 ish.

Had my RT done there. It's not been without problems as the stepper motor was corroded and need a new one of those to make the damping adjustments.

Wilbers make their own as I believe they cannot be bought through BMW.
