ESA removal-Normal Wilbers

I find the esa on my bike a bit shit compared to the Wilbers on my last gsa, and was wandering if any one had removed it and put standard Wilbers on??
I have a set off my old bike only done 1000 miles or so and wandered if i was to fit them if the bike would come up with all sorts of errors codes on the dash?
Or am i better to sell these and go for the wesa Wilbers? EXPENSIVE

i think you will have to go the wilburs esa route methinks,i reckon my next gsa will be specced without esa just so i can change to better suspenders more easily.

The problem's not with the ESA (which is just an adjustment mechanism), its with the shock itself. Whether you switch to a standard Wilburs shock or go with the Wilburs WESA, the shock is better on both than the OEM. Basically the shock is the same on either, its just that one has manual adjustment the other is electronic. Oh, and the ESA version is a lot more expensive.

My brother has just put a Wilbers shock on his Aprilia Pegaso. The back end feels planted and the ride is so smooth you would think the tyre was half flat. Stunning for £350 fitted. Shame the WESA is only £1000 more.

I would like to know how many people on here adjust their suspension that often that it needs to be done electronically?

I just wind the preload up if I have luggage or a pillion.

I only got a bike with ESA as I knew it would be one of the options people wanted to see on the bike if and when I come to sell it.

Oh and the difference between the before and after is massive.

I change mine when swmbo gets on the back or when I put panniers on or when I go from rough b road to a road..... Shall I go on?

Yup, you can go on....

But only if you notice a difference in the BMW ESA!!

Mine was either.. Harsh, Harsh or... yup you got it...

The other point being that, with quality suspension rather than the very poor stock BMW fare.....you DON'T need to change the settings for every change in road surface.

Those that change their ESA settings regularly I'm certain only do so because they can, not because they need to (I'm equally certain they will now argue the toss tho. )
I never go from billiard table smooth road to bumpy mud covered back road thinking "I wish I could adjust my suspension settings just now". They cope just fine with both.

I have had ESA on my last few bikes and whilst normal is the default I do frequently change settings according to road conditions and IMHO there is quite a difference between them. Approaching a series of speed bumps, engage comfort, smooth twisty tarmac, sport it is, mix them up and you'll know about it as you jar over those bumps in sport mode or run wide on the bends in comfort.

That said I'm pretty sure all the ESA is doing is assisting some pretty crappy standard suspension cope with differing road conditions. I reckon a set of properly set up quality suspension units will easily outperform ESA units.

If I keep my bike long enough for the shocks to go I'll be looking to replace with aftermarket ones but couldn't justify the cost as an upgrade alone

The thread linked to is in the for sale and wanted section which is for subs only. It's only £12 and well worth it to find a bargain, if you can't find any other reason.
