dunno

I give the bikes a good going over before liftoff, every time we go i carry less and less tools and equipment,i generally take most of a decent 1/4 drive socket set loose in a bag to save space, a small multimeter, screwdrivers and combo spanners, allen keys, temp punct kit, 12 volt compressor, engine Oil,pliers, cutters, adjustable, if this kit wont fix your breakdown, youre probably in the poop, and its time to contact the men in orange, to borrow their tools and so on.
If you get a driveshaft let go, youre stuffed, if a gearbox bearing goes youre stuffed, if youre big ends go,again youre stuffed.
I dont claim to know everything, but i know enough to get out of the mire most of the time, but i do know this much, i ride my bike to enjoy the ride, and not worry about "what if".
In my "experience" in the van,you seem to carry tons of stuff you may use once in a blue moon, pound to a penny you may carry every spare you may think you will need, and something other than what you have will needed, right or wrong? be honest..
As i said prep is the key,and a crap day on the bike is better than any day at work, and meeting new people is all part of the adventure.
I'm sorry if my opinion seems to offend you Neil, but hey, lifes too short..

The spares i carry will fit in one hand - They'll stop you being stranded, and are all things that you can fix at the side of the road.

They're things that i see fail on BMW's on a regular basis, hence why i carry them so i don't have to worry about the "what ifs".
In morocco you'll have a long wait for a breakdown service, and in the middle of spain on a weekend :D.

Lifes too short to sit at the side of the road waiting to be helped when you can be on your way in less than an hour.

Rear bevel bearing & seal.
TPS unit.
Clutch slave cylinder.
Hall sensor.

Throttle Position Sensor (that black plastic box stuck on the outside of the left-hand injector body).

Thats the jobbie - not crucial as a spare - if it does go wrong the usual symptoms are a crap running bike and heavy fuel consumption, and i mean heavy - 80 miles to a tank . As one of timolgras group found out in morocco a few years ago.

So it shouldn't lerave you stranded, unless you run out of money filling it up.

I would have absolutely no need to carry any of this shite as i have absolutely no idea what you are talking about or what any of it does:confused:.

Call the AA and :beerjug::jager:beer:

This what i don't get, try some logical thinking.

If you call the AA man, and remember the AA isn't available outside of the UK, and generally nothing is available outside of europe.
He turns up and says " sorry it's your sprag nut, can't fix that, but i'll get you taken to a dealer", that's your holiday totally disrupted or over.
If your part of a group, what do they do, wait or carry on ? If your with the wife, oh happy days.

But if the AA man, or for arguments sake "la AA man " arrives and says " merde, it's la sprag nut, no possable chum, non fix that", and then you say " oh but i have a spare sprag nut here".
10 minutes later your back on your holiday.

Even better, outside of europe you'll always find someone who'll be able to repair/fix your bike , IF you have the part with you. :D

Amex and a hip flask. They ain't as backward as you might be thinking.

Fit heavy duty inner tubes and decent fresh rubber and you'll be fine. Chain lube, and a tool kit to adjust the chain / fix things when you drop it and stuff moves.

Loosen mirrors and the like so they swivel not break.

Fly spray, the bastard things are everywhere.

Ear plugs to drown out your mates snoring!

Is it a 1200

Where do you put your spare final drive if its a 1200 :augie must be a large top box?:D
Only Joking Neil, i do follow your train of thought and what you say makes very good common sense, but i seem to be taking less and less each year.
Some of my mates ride "japcrap" but it just doesnt break down, what more can i say?.
RAC does cover 95% of europe though, check Carole Nash they cover Europe too,but dont expect them in 60 mins, more like 6 hours.
But you wont get much luck with foreign places like morocco, turkey, etc, you are on your own, and as Neil says you have to prepare.
i read quite a good guide in TBM in april2009, that was very explanatory.
