I've emailed MCN and asked them to post a note in Wednesday's issue stating only those with "confirmed regitration" should attend and anyone who hasn't, should join the air ambulance ride in September.

I did however extend an invitation for MCN to cover the ride.

Let's see if that helps.

Blimey amazing how these things grow. What's the definitive list of Registered Members. I got the email so I guess I'm in? Squadron Leader? PeterB?
 
Keith, I'd like to know what kind of numbers you are now expecting. I've only just been made aware of how this ride-out appears to have grown out of all proportion.

If the numbers are huge, I think I will drop-out as I'm not really comfortable riding with large groups of riders. :(

I cannot say how many are going to turn up on the day. No more than 40 will be riding the route with us. If more than 40 turn up then I will split the group into smaller groups and there will be more than one ride-out. The good news is that it looks like rain for Saturday so I'm guessing that you "go anywhere" GSers will not be put off by that and that it will keep the Virago riding ******s in their garages.

I know that 40 still sounds like a big bunch but that is maximum. Any more than that and we will not get into the Cafe for lunch. As for riding with a big bunch: we will not be riding as a bunch (I hope). We will be keeping a safe distance between ourselves and anyone else and riding as individuals. There are no big roads involved in this route so there are no opportunities to ride as a bunch.

We'll have a group photo and that'll be the bunch thing done.

Apologies if this is a stupid question - does the above mean that people are not welcome unless they've got express permission to turn up?

I found out about it through the other GS site, and wouldn't mind coming along - didn't realise there was a requirement to register, but won't bother if I'll be a nuisance or in the way. Not a problem, just would like to know before I drag myself out of bed on Saturday!

Could someone possibly clarify? Ta!

650, truth be told, there's no registration in place, it was a means of keeping the numbers manageable after we'd heard there might be too many to cope with. So as far as I know, no one has officially registered and it's down to contacting Blade Baiter to let him know if you want to come or not.

I'd hoped MCN might have helped keep numbers down but there was nothing in yesterdays issue, however, there have been a couple of radio broadcasts and newspaper articles which we hope will have directed the bulk of the riders to the September 4th air ambulance ride instead.

Everyone is doing all they can to keep this rideout under control, however it will only be on Saturday that we see what the outcome is and whether the weather will keep people away, whether we'll have to do a groups at staggered starts. If there are too many, we could always start groups off in the opposite direction too.

It's fingers crossed time.
 
Yes 650, If you want to come then please come. If anyone gets turned away it wont be any GS riders.

I intend to visit a local bike club who are meeting tonight to speak with their president/chairman/whatever. Apparently they are interested in coming on the ride. I will be asking him to do us a favour, that is: in the event of too many riders turning up at the start (more than 40) that his club members could lead another ride-out, with any excess numbers, along a different route. My reasoning is this: they are experienced at leading ride-outs, plus it is one of their members who has been promoting this run as if it were a thousand bike parade.

Excellent news. I'll try and come along anyway, and if it's too busy, I'll just go shopping in the market instead!:D
 
Myself and Lamble met with the Dengie 100 Motorcycle club last night. We had an excellent night (I'm sure you'll agree Steve) socialising with the club members and partaking of the nectar that is Maldon Gold's Mighty Oak, served by the lovely barstaff at The Star at Steeple. They meet there on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month and their catchment area is between Maldon, Battlesbridge, Burnham and Bradwell; that peninsular is the Dengie Hundred but they also have members from further afield - We do need fresh blood in the gene-pool around here!

Anyway, a contingency plan is now in place: If more than 40 riders turn up at the start their Club have agreed to lead an alternative ride-out. Nobody knows where yet but I'm sure they'll have a good time.

Sorted!

See you lot on the green at 9:00 in the morning then.

Oh dear..

Due to unforeseen circumstances couldn't get to Epping for 0930 start. Went to Manningtree (Railway Station Cafe) at mid day hoping to link up there (lunch stop) staff had not had confirmation that the ride was passing through for lunch (waited till 1pm)

Persume that many turned up and 'the pack' was split up for different rideouts.

Sorry I missed it guys but hope all had a good run and all got home safe.

Will look forward to next time. :)
 
tricky, same here. Missed you by 10 mins then have ridden home in a monsoon! hope the ride went well

Hello All -

Just thought I'd say thanks to Keith and everyone for an excellent ride - well organised and a great route (for the bit that I came on) - up to lunch time.

I guess someone will do a full report, but for Tricky and Stu12, there were about 25 bikes, one of us had a bit of an accident near Saffron Walden - hopefully he's OK, but we were a little delayed, and that was the reason for us not getting to Manningtree in time for lunch!

Tricky and Stu, Sorry that you missed us. As 650 has said, one of the riders had an accident outside Saffron Waldon and we were a bit delayed. From Cavendish, at about 12:40 I phoned the Manningtree Cafe and was told that they were going to stop cooking and couldn't cater for us. Plan "B" was an unplanned stop at The Eight Bells in Bures for lunch. Then we decided to cancel the north Eastern section of the ride and so we went from Bures to Maldon via the Abberton Reservior road. In one further incident, waiting at a level-crossing between West Bergholt and Eight Ash Green I could smell something nasty, when I looked around the Honda CBR600 rider who was waiting next to me was leaping off of his smoking bike. I'll write a longer report when I have more time and hopefully I'll have some news on how Rob (the guy who had the accident) is doing.

Thanks Keith for the organising the rideout. I thoroughly enjoyed the day and hope that the guy who fell is ok.

As (if) we do more of these I guess that we'll all learn to plan fuel/pee stops to help move things along.

Where the feck did all that rain come from as we left Southend. By the time I got off the esplanade I got a crotch wetter than an duck's socks.

Still apart from that, what an eventful day. Good roads too, especially the cart track from Foxsomethingorother. Blocked roads, barbecued CBR, helicopter rides, wet cobble dropped chrome cruiser and soggy man furniture...who could ask for more?

Guess what...we raised money too.

Oh by the way I've heard the chap who had the accident has broken two ribs and his collar bone, and is still in Colchester Hospital. They managed to straighten his bike out enough and his partner managed to ride it home.

B]So that's why you should go on the Air Ambulance ride out on 4th September![/B]

Just wanted to add our thanks to those already given. Great day, if a little too eventful for my taste. Kieth kept his cool no matter what. Fantastic.

Our first ride out in a long time. Don't think it will be our last. Thanks for making us welcome.

Rob was out of hospital by Monday morning; Two broken ribs and a broken collar-bone but, thankfully, the suspected heart-attack was a false alarm. My heart sank to my boots when I heard Chris the Back-Marker telling me over the AutoCom "We've had a bit of an accident". But with the help of the Air Ambulance, the paramedics, the police, passers-by and friends we managed to make the best of a bad deal. Rob's fellow Dengie 100 club members stayed to look after Rob's bike and Rob was flown to hospital. The rest of us were able to meet up again at Cavendish to resume the ride. Then my heart sunk again whilst on the phone to the Railway Cafe in Manningtree. They told us that they had stopped cooking and could only offer us sandwiches. We carried on regardless but on the way through Bures my belly took over the planning and we stopped at The 8 Bells, on the Essex side of the bridge. I apologetically asked the barstaff whether they could cater for 25 of us for lunch. They made us most welcome and laid out tables in a back room especially to make a restaurant for us. We were well looked after and I can recommend their pub.
I'll write some more when I have time.

I must read all the way down the page in future. Ignore my message on East Anglia thread, glad you all enjoyed it.
