Europe with a 660, forget it, buy the maps instead! (more likely to be user error)

I've just done 2 weeks round Europe with my spangly new MP3 player. That's right, a 500 quid MP3 player! Works fine until you get away from any kind of a connection to the internet then Garmin change the software and your zumo turns into a 1/2 pound lead weight that plays MP3's.:(
Garmin (lack of) support say, just plug your zumo into your computer and download the latest software, that MIGHT sort it. 'Er right, 'cos i took my computer and broadband connection and cables and a generator to power it all on the off chance:blast. :rob Just so you all know, i went on my bike, not in a f.... tour bus!
Anyway, update once blagged from the nearest hotel, just made it worse so all it does now is play MP3's and take you on mystery tours, well that is until it decides to just switch off:eek:
So my advice, drive a bus, OR, buy paper maps and learn to navigate the old fashoned way, save a bundle of tokens to spend on go go juice instead!:JB

Looks like you've just registered here - to slag off Garmin?

S'funny that everyone else made it to "Europe" and back okay? :nenau

You did plug it in, didn't you?

Al

Strange, everyone else reports that each update makes the 660 a little better.

From reading your other posts, it sounds like you and machinery have a strange relationship :comfort

Odd.

Mine has just worked fine on the bike and in the car....right across France, into Spain and back.

OK, some tiny glitches (many self-inflicted) but nothing that would cause me to hang myself or throw the device into the fires of hell.

Phone Garmin.

or buy a TomTom.

Pleeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaasssseeeeeeeeeeeeee..............

BTW: Your advice is worthless; I've had a 660 for a few months used nigh-on daily in the UK/Europe without any tantrums.

YMMV and obviously does.

I've just got back from 10 weeks and 11,000 miles through Europe and have had no real problems with the 660.

The only real issue I had was the unit slowing down - it was taking two minutes to load the map when I started up. This was fixed by reformating the card and reloading my music. Seems like a carry over from the 550???

I don't use much music on the device but I understand that if you put the music into separate files, it helps.

For instance:

File 1 say 5 cd's

File 2 another 5

File 3 another 5

etc. etc.

The device does not struggle to open the three (or more) files and sort all the albums and songs. But does struggle to open one single file with, in this example, 15 cd's.

I assume 'file=directory'?

Using WMP12 to sync the music to the Garmin then a 4GB card and an 8GB card, the 660 hasn't shown any slowdowns that I've noticed and I use the audio everytime the GPS is on the bike, which is all the time.

I use a 8GB card. I usually just copy the albums across that I'm interested in listening to. On a newly formatted card and copying a bunch of CD's across caused no performance problem but after a few weeks (I use it all day, every day) and deleting some folders and adding new ones, the device started to get slower and slower on startup. It got to the point where it was taking 2 minutes to load the maps. At this stage I reformatted the card and copied the music over to the card again. That cured the problem for a while but it did reoccur after a lot of deleting and copying. File fragmentation causing this??

Not a big deal for me but it is a bit of a pain when you need to copy a bunch of music across in the middle of nowhere and your laptop battery is going flat!
