Even if you don’t buy mine - TFT thieving!

That would be the one without shade plus postage, I was having a look myself.

I must have bought the last of the mk1's and really struggling to make it sit flush with the added Cymarc screen brackets
so much so i have given up for now and will take another look when weather and time allows.

Soggy I had exactly the same issue, I too have a mk1 brackets and the screen brackets, and after a couple of attempts (plus some advice from Cymarc), have got mine all sitting down nice and flush and working. The trick I found was to get it all mounted up and almost done up. I then did the offside up first starting with the uppermost screw, whilst holding the TFT bracket firmly down onto the screen (I think I nipped up the top, then nipped up the bottom, then tightened the top and then tightened the bottom). Then did the same on the nearside. After looking at it carefully to see why this worked, what I think was happening was that as it was tightening up it was gently moving the brackets under the washers, holding it all firmly in place and doing both screws a bit at a time got it sorted for me. Hope that helps

Thanks Hawkeye i'll give that a go next weekend
cheers

Incredible, all this security issue down to BMW cutting down time on the production line. The 1200GS had the same issue, you can pull the clocks off as well.

Understood and I haven’t discounted Mark’s version which looks good, I just prefer not to have lots of brand names on a bike especially in the cockpit area where, for me, it should be aesthetically clean and consistent.

Understood, I put a KTM sticker on mine😂

Guys/Gals, seemingly it’s becoming more common on these screen thefts - here’s a good video about what can be done.

You don’t have to buy mine (or anyone’s for that matter) but PLEASE be mindful of what seems to be happening and ride safe (when allowed to do so).

The fact that a £1200 TFT on a 20k bike can just be pulled off, and in so doing can cause upwards of a further £1k of damage to the loom, is surely a design fault 🤷🏻*♂️. Should there not be a recall to fit a proper security bezel. Come on BMW, how much do you really care about your loyal customers?

What I can’t see is why? I’m presuming they are pretty useless except for a bmw? And probably only the one it came off? JJH

Could be a load of rubbish but read somewhere there’s valuable materials in them so could be breaking them for that.

Kind of like those converters in the exhaust system? Theft of them are very common here. JJH

I think theft of these units, if indeed they are being stolen hasn’t been helped by MCN highlighting the issue in a recent publication and then folk on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcUj57wgPTs&t=6s spreading the news too.

It doesn’t take long for bad news to travel and for crims to grasp an opportunity.

I couldn't get the first one to fit properly at all, but the replacement unit is better:

I agree with the comments on et screws too & suggested security Torqx would be the preferred head.

The real crims are the people that pay for whatever the desperate small time low life scumbags get out of nicking these things. same with cat converters. Then the producers of prevention equipment make legit profit on the back of it. I get that One-off development and marketing costs are high but then the margin increases as more are sold. the price of product never goes down accordingly. I also get that there's an issue with these getting nicked but I know there's some scaremongering going on too.

I remember when you could (allegedly) disable the immobiliser on a Land Rover Defender and then start the vehicle simply by cutting one wire which was easily accessible externally. Land Rover repeatedly denied this claim vigorously but it was apparently correct and LR finally confirmed it. I don’t remember it being plastered all over the web making the likelihood of theft even greater.
Problems like this should be a closely guarded secret, known only to those that need to know.

I’d be interested to know the actual numbers of screens being stolen. Is it scaremongering? I simply don’t know.

And, as the fixation of the TFT is, as has been widely reported, about as secure as Velcro holding your laptop to your topbox, I’d like BMW to come up with a solution, and fit it at my next service. I’m not holding my breath, but I would say that the designed security of an expensive part of the vehicle is not of marketable quality. Frankly I’m surprised the insurers accept it at all.

It’s like a lot security on bikes. You could make a unbreakable steering lock so the frame would be twisted instead. You could make the tft screen much more difficult to remove but at extra damage? If they are being stolen there’s a reason. Is there a market for them? Or as someone said there’s a certain amount of precious metals in them. I’m not convinced about the value of any components after all you can get more information out of a cheap tablet for €50 so what’s the attraction of them. How many have been stolen? JJH

Ordered mine, asked for confirmation of payment receipt and got an email explaining that there’s a manufacturing backlog on everything it would appear.

Yeh, I've the same message. Need to have a word with the Governor, a stern word, no more fear mongering until they can fill the orders.. :D

Same hear but if the scum want to break into my garage and nick that tft their are more valuable things than that in their
So I am in no hurry as the bike won’t be going out before March
