Anyone had any problems with the ews/ignition on a 1200gsa. I rode the bike today around town then stopped for five mins and then it wouldnt start again. It took bmw three and a half hours to pick the bike up which left me missing a meeting got no apology or offer of a replacement bike.To be fair to joe duffys they were on the ball and said they hope to have the bike back to me tomorrow.Bmw dont seem to give a f..ck as the same thing happened my missus last week with a car that was two days old. They left her waiting for three hours and then came with a tow truck and took the car away and the driver who is obviously a subcontractor couldnt get her to the garage to get a replacement car again. The dealer was embarrassed about the whole bm mondial service which I think is absolutely shite.I would expect that when you buy a premium product that you would be looked after and not told that there will be a recovery truck with you in an hour that eventually takes three and a half with no explanation.I havent got a problem with the bike sitting down as these things happen but a bit of service is not much to expect after spending the guts of twenty grand on a bike.Back to the problem with the ews is this common on these bikes.:spitfire

EWS is the immobiliser has triggered ... probably a failure of the antenna ring (the raised ring surrounding the ignition slot), no chance of circumventing it due to the ECU shutting down the can-bus wiring system as a result.

BMW assist will just recover to dealer and await spares (typically from factory). This is *definately* a long-term fault and not isolated to just the 1200GS(A), as I've discussed same with a number of owners of various models. Its just this issue that would see me refuse to do a serious overland off-road trip on any 1200 derivative. Where dealer support is available its fine (annoying, but manageable), in the boon-docks with half a ton of immobilised bike, luggage, etc its unacceptable.

Anyway, watch out for BMW assists inexperienced recovery units (bike recovery that is!), I'm in the middle of a wrangle with them due to frame paintwork damage from my third recovery incident. They secured the GSA with a strap across the lower frame-members of the rear-subframe, ratchetting it down for secure transport. In rachetting it down the strap wore the paint off the frame at the intersection of one weld/tube, which has rusted to hell in the last few weeks. Knowing the quality (or not!) of welding, I'm not keen to see rusting in this area---especially on a bike less than one year old!
