for (a) an unreliable piece of electronic crap that lets us down and could strand us with little warning and (b) a particularly awkward installation that means a change out takes 10 times longer than it should.

I met the dreaded EWS display 9 days ago and suffered a day of Fails-To-Start-First-Time, but eventually made it home

So with the rain on for the day, this afternoon I decided I'd fit my spare EWS unit. Referring to Haynes manual I read as far as "remove top yoke" and threw that aside (being a handy sort of guy)

1. Remove side panels + nose beak - 20 Torx no probs
2. Remove horn (Stebel) - 2 connectors + 10mm spanner no probs
3. Remove 2 small screws and lift off small EWS cover - 10 Torx easy enough
4. Fight with a few cable ties and the 2 connectors on EWS and ignition switch
5. Remove 2 small screws holding steering lock under ignition assembly - Screwdriver fiddly
6. I-Spy 2 security bolts holding EWS + ignition unit - BASTIDS :mad:
7. Discover big boy has borrowed battery drill, but fortunately find old B+D mains drill hiding in cupboard
8. Start drilling out security bolt number 1 - am I even scratchng this little bogger?
9. Big boy shows up and lends a hand (he's even more handy than me these days) with drilling operation as I hold bike down + he has more patience than me
10. 5mm drill snaps + drill jumps - while rubbing my finger I don't notice that loom has been snagged (we'll come back to this)
11. Drill heads off 2 security bolts with some serious 8mm drilling
12. Lift out EWS + ignition barrel
13. Admire the 2 8mm bolts sticking down (fokk + double fokk) + look for mole grips - no proper stud extractor
14. Get stuck in with mole grips to unscrew studs - these boggers are tight with thread seal and not much room to turn mole grips
15. Get angry + drive to ScrooFax to look for real stud extactor - none but buy smaller mole grips
16. Return to battle with 2 studs and finally unscrew them
17. Wipe down ignition barrel,grease steering lock, pop on new EWS and install with 2 nice shiny 8mm button head bolts, 2 minutes with 5mm hex key :) bloooodee bumwee and their security bolts
18. Fit 2 connectors to EWS + ignition lock
19. Start bike, not without a lot of dash flashing, inc. EWS, but hey-ho away we go :)
20. Notice dip beam (HID) is not working and dash warning is showing - Fokk It :mad:
21. Big boy has gone home by now so I can't bitch to him when I discover wiring loom is damaged at LHS
22. Faff about for some time finding wire, flux, soldering iron and patch up loom. Smile when headlamp works OK
23. Refit Horn + Beak + Panels
23. Discover no oil showing in sight glass :eek: so throw in more than 1/2 litre to keep it happy for the night
24. Fiddle with Techlusion box under seat in the hope that the misfire will improve next time out
25. Look longingly at sunset in distance and pray that it might be dry tomorrow and we'll actually get out for a spin (big boy has a nice new S1000R parked by my GS that just had first service on Saturday and had it's rev limiter removed, so I want a shot too)
26. Slam garage door and head indoors to open first bottle of beer :jager
 
You know, i have none of those problems on my dakar as it has none of that fancy ews or canbus crap. :thumb2


tho it does take longer to get a hookers knickers down than it does to hotwire the bike so i'm not sure who got the better deal :nenau



It does sound remarkably like my weekend when i decided to re grease all the bearings on the swingarm / rear shock. You know somethings not right when you remove the rear wheel and a brake pad falls off :blast

28.Go and by a spare ews ring to replace the newly fitted spare ews ring .:aidan
