I have just picked up a virtually new Cat for my 1150. I would to do a straight swap for my current tarnished Cat. Nothing fancy.

I am concerned about the lambda sensor and what effect its removal and re fitting will have on the engine running. Should I worry?

What I have read in the repair manual is two slighly disconcerting lines.

Line 1) Secure the oxygen sensor with special socket
wrench insert, BMW No. 11 7 020.

Whats so special about this socket?

Line 2) Caution:
After a trial run, read out Motronic fault memory.
Note position of wiring for oxygen sensor.

I am not sure what the above is pertaining to!

I have picked up off this forum that the lambda sensor can ruin your day. So I just wanted to cover all bases before I swap the Cat over.

I'm guessing the socket is just a slotted socket to give a better all-round grip whilst being able to get the sensor wire through it.

I just used a standard box spanner and did it up to four white fingers and a pinky torque, no problems

The bit about the fault memory I guess is because if you turn the ignition on or run the bike without the lambda in place, it generates a fault code in the motronic memory.

When I swapped ypiece for cat I just got a spanner on it, easier with the ypiece dropped, I had enough slack to do that. I tightened it back up on the cat hand tight as Fanum mentioned. didn't undo anything all seems fine and runs ok, been on the dyno since having the techlusion set up and nothing bad picked up there (not sure if it would)
Shouldn't have been done up that tight.
The special socket is as mentioned just to get around the wiring. Job can be done without it.

Why not just unplug the cat at the connector and use a ring spanner? It's just up under the tank and easy to access...

Mike
