I'm thinking of changing the standard exhaust on my 1100gs for a Remus with link pipe and muffler. The standard exhaust as currently fitted to my bike has a cat fitted as its a German import. What effect, if any will the new exhaust have on performance and fuel consumption.

What else will I need to consider when changing over? What do I do with the Lambda sensor?

Easy one first, both the Remus link pipe and replacement mid sections I've seen have a hole I'm assuming is for the Lambada sensor. It looks the right size and location.

Many have returned to the standard setup after fitting aftermarket exhausts on the 1100 as it can be easy to mess up the balance between noise / power / fuel economy / surging.

In theory as there's less resistance in the exhaust without a cat, then you might get a bit more power and better fuel consumption. But if the balance isn't right, then you might get less power / worse fuel consumption and bad surging  An interim option might be to buy a UK BM made 1100GS exhaust, as it has the mid silencer (like a Cat'd one) but no cat in it.

Having done it previously on a 11GS and bought one with a Remus.....I wouldn't

They run better on the standard set-up, however I've never had one with a Cat........................but my 1150Adv with the Cat runs fine and is plenty fast enough

on the 1100 they are better run as standard, lots of people here have changed, then changed back.

Exactly what i did.. (sorta)

My bike is a German import and the CAT was an EX Cat... which had shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisibile!!

I Binned the original exhaust (with EX cat) - disconnected the Lamda probe and its wiring from the loom and binned that.

Fitted a virtually unused original UK spec exhaust. (£20 off ebay)

Bike was transformed.

I just won't bother messing with the exhaust.. yes a lighter one would be a nice idea... but.. I don't like the thought of the can of worms I could be opening by messing about further with the bike ~ "If it ain't broke...."

Slightly contrary but hopefully helpful:D

My 2nd 11GS was tight as a ducks behind when I bought it and was a bit jumpy slow running and tight high up above 70mph. I fitted a 2nd hand Remus with collector and it freed up especially at the top end. I also had a Superchip fitted and this set up was excellent and 1150 like for acceleration.

My present 'een I fitted a Laser (cheap buy 2nd hand) and this was not so good as it was too loud and made the midrange bog down. Back to standard for MOT and this was how it stayed with midrange back (very noticiably). Recently I wanted to fit a bigger LH pannier and bought a 2nd hand Remus with collector to help it fit. It also has a road legal end can and is not much louder than standard. It is very little different but seems slightly sharper on accelleration.

To be honest they all seem bit different normally which is very R series BM. The 11's are usually best when they are higher mileage and have been ridden quite hard. The best 11GS I ever rode was a standard 80k+ L reg on a p/x. The best general R11 was an p/x RT with far lower mileage which was just "sweet" to ride.

As the guys have said standard is usually the best compromise and R11's just keep on getting looser the more you ride'em.

Main thing is don't throw money at tuning!:thumb

My 1100 came with a Remus can and mid section can. Not too loud and only a slight hint of surging if I really try to find it. Not going to mess about with the engine unless someone gives me a link pipe for free.

Another one who went back to the stock pipe here, I reckon BMW make the best exhaust for these bikes.

Again a slightly counter response, but as this is for an 1150 there may be a difference. With a stock exhaust I had a few surging issues, usually at low revs trundling through towns (4th gear about 30 mph with about 2K and a bit on the counter). After binning the cat and fitting an Akro end can the surging disappeared. I noticed a little more mid range but it was the elimination of the surging that I really enjoyed and was the real benefit.
